Why would they want to waste money on furniture for a place they will live in at most 120 days? And it's easy to buy easier and less mess to buy disposable plates, etc. |
I'm surprised. At our community pool in Bethesda, we have no foreign nationals as lifeguards. The pool workers tend to be children of members. |
| These jobs should be going to local teens . It's appalling that in our neighborhood pool not one local teen is working as a lifeguard. |
Let's be honest. Many middle and upper-class kids would rather not work if they don't have to or do internships, SSL hours, etc. I teach the lifeguarding course for many local pool companies and they go out of their way to try and recruit local teenagers. They go to many MCPS high schools and set up job fairs but kids just aren't flocking to the job like they were even ten years ago. Heck, even when I was a pool guard back in the late 90's the companies would comment how fewer and fewer kids were applying for lifeguarding jobs. It also doesn't help that our couch potato tendencies make it a challenge for some of the teens taking the course to pass the pre-requisite swim tests given the first night of class. |
I'm American. I spent the summer between my junior and senior college year living in a 3 BR house with 10 people. On an air mattress. We had no plates or utinsils. I think we used disposable. I waitressed and nannied for money. At night we got drunk, days off we went to the beach. Charleston Sc. Best summer of my life. |
Because the pay is crappy! If they were paying more (as they should be!) they would get more teens to do it. Same with all the other jobs that get taken by illegal immigrants or other low paid foreign workers. |
| They are not here illegally. This is a legal summer hire program. American kids also benefit from summer and work abroad programs. I have zero objection to temporary legal work, except that I too would like to see the conditions and pay to be better and of course expect Americans to be welcomed to apply as well. Do expect what you pay for summer fun to go up though, if they do this. |
Is your apartment across from UDC? I have seen many of them there |
Must be republican area. Democrats import guest workers. |
this concept of supply and demand is too complicated for Democrats to understand. They would rather give out green cards and get more votes. |
Where? Because FFX County can't get enough lifeguards for their pools. Most of the pool clubs can't either, and nobody pays more than minimum wage here. |
Our HHI is over $700k/yr. Both of our teens have jobs. I don't think our kids know how much we make--at any rate, we usually tell them that's what we make. It's not their money, and they need to figure out how to earn their own. (That said, we do pay pay for their outrageous private school tuition among other things) |
PP here who trains lifeguards - I applaud your attitude. I also grew up in a very affluent family but my siblings and I all had to have jobs starting at 15. Definitely taught me to appreciate the value of a dollar and helped give me a good sense of responsibility. |
This is true. I think the fee just to join the program is about $2000+, so not everyone can afford it. |

I actually don't believe the local lifeguard companies want to hire local teens and probably do very little to attract them or hire them. I am sure they pay lip serive to doing it though.
There are companies that will find, interview, background check, obtain visas, for the kids from Eastern Europe. The hiring is done and they have staff in place well in advance of the pool season and all the US company had to do was make a single request and send payment to the company who does the hiring and coordination. So why is a US company to go through the hassle of interviewing, background checks, etc when they don't have to. |
