You know you're an autism parent when you finally get a precious 20 minutes when the kid is in speech and you're in the waiting room, you don't have an IEP to review or a doctor's appointment to schedule, so you watch that Thomas episode straight through from beginning to end with no repeats.

And then you realized what you've done, and that it will be 6 months before you get another 20 minute break.

THIS. Still get the question, "What is her special gift/talent?" because every autistic person, like Rain Man, has a savant ability.

I’ve started asking the person to tell me their super power. Or I say that he’s very talented at giving hugs. He is. He’s the best damned hugger ever.

Aww! For most people, my child on the spectrum does the "you may hug me if you must" stance where he turns his body to the side and tolerates. For my husband and me though we get the real deal and it is a major love hug.

so nice. My son dodges me whenever I want to hug him. I hope when he passes puberty I might get hugs again (he used to sort of tolerate them, though was never huggy.)
