Lake Barcroft - any residents?

Welcome to DCUM.. this crap is the norm around here. I can only guess it's a bunch of bored SAHM's with nothing better to do than post drivel on here. I don't live in Lake Barcroft, but know friends that do and it seems like a decent area to me, just not my cup of tea. I've never been in the lake but I certainly wouldn't be scared to or to let my kids.

My doc friend said Barcroft is fine but stay the hell out of Lake Anna.

When I picked him up, I was nauseated by the sight of that water! Went online to find that they've had FOUR raw sewage spills in that lake, latest being 2015, and residents have had issues with e-coli. County knew about the spills, didn't notify residents right away. Apparently a resident who's dd got sick, took it upon herself to test the water, only to THEN have the county come clean..

SO not ok

Wondering if anyone lives there and can update me as to issues with water? Having my kid wash in Hibicleans (probably overkill, but the pharmacist was horrified and told me that was what to do).

Millennial born and raised in Lake Barcroft - and *gasp* - a product of FCPS and JEB Stuart. Just bought a house after 8 years in Arlington and moved back to start a family. I swim in the lake all summer long like many residents. Fear not helicopter mom. It was a phenomenal place to grow up and I hope my kids enjoy it as much as I did.

The water quality is monitored and managed by a WID that is funded by a special tax district: http://www.lakebarcroftwid.com/about_v2.html

Details about water quality are here: http://www.lakebarcroftwid.com/documents/WID_LBA_WaterQualityAdvisory_140728.pdf

OP here. Thank you. This is what I was looking for

I love the neighborhood, just was appalled at what FFX CTY did to the lake and residents, and wanted to make sure things were good now. Y'all can't help a lying governmental agency.

I can appreciate some brick ramblers with lake views but my couple times going around there wasn't for me. And if one kid makes it out to an ivy does that mean a school is great? What about the majority who don't?

Stuart graduating a bunch of first-generation students who attend George Mason or VCU is probably more impressive than a school like Marshall graduating a bunch of privileged kids who go to George Mason and JMU.

Pp here, I would buy that. I have always chalked lake barcroft up to areas like fort hunt off of GWP in Alexandria. Decent SFH neighborhoods that suffer from va's tendencies to still clump public housing together in historically minority corridors even if it sinks a few neighborhoods as long as it doesn't touch where the donor class lives.

While it might be easy to spot why the areas are in decline it doesn't make them any less in decline or desirable in the new market's rush towards precieved quality.

I'm not sure why you'd say the areas are in decline when the housing prices have been appreciating over the past decade (22% in 22044 and 10% in 22041). Another thing that tells you the area is holding its own is the fact that the number of white students at Stuart has been increasing in recent years (which is relevant in this context since whites in Fairfax County usually are at least middle-class).

The recent experience in both eastern Falls Church and South Arlington shows that, at some point, higher-income people are prepared to set aside some of their prejudices against brown and black people when the alternative is living in an outer suburb or exurb with a miserable commute.

Ah, I wouldn't go that far.

I know LB very well. You have the people on the lake, who are rednecks but make a modest amount of money. The only reason these people don't live in Manasshole is the commute. Then you have everyone off the lake and these people are flat out poor, usually mid ranking gov people who don't care if their children go to awful schools. There is nothing wrong with that lake though just to be fair.

You really don't know what you are talking about. Lake Barcroft has always attracted a fairly liberal crowd, stemming from the community's willingness decades ago to sell to Jews and blacks when many other local communities in both Virginia and Maryland had restrictive covenants in their sales contracts. Not to mention that referring to mid-level government employees as "flat-out poor" shows what an idiot you are.

Seriously, just fuck off, and leave the community to those who are happy to enjoy its beauty and avoid assholes like you.

Don't forget to insult other schools nearby like George Mason, McLean and Madison

Well the blacks apparently didn't share your view that LB is a "fairly liberal crowd" bc there isn't one black living there.

You are an idiot and a nuisance.

My DC's school had an end of year party there several years ago. About half the kids, including my kid, who got in the water developed a terrible rash. Turns out it's a parasite from bird poop that grows in stagnant freshwater. The rash cleared up fairly quickly, but, yeah, we're not swimming in that lake again.

Jmu and Mason are perfectly good schools and a great value. many middle class northern va families are very happy to send their kids there. Don't be an asshole.

Pp here -- I've never posted this before. Maybe more than one person has had this experience? In fact, there were about 75 kids on that one trip, so I know at least that many people have the same story.
