I'd like to hold out hope, but how could such a small child survive this?

"Some witnesses said they saw the toddler along the beach near the water, but no eye-witnesses to him being dragged into the water by an alligator were available for comment Tuesday night."

Makes me wonder if this is more hysteria then actually what happened. I guess time will tell.

Right. Maybe the kid is actually back in the hotel and the parents and pretending for shits and giggles.

This article has info about the protection and killing of alligators in Florida and how things have changed since the 50's.

The hotels are beautiful, lovely architecture + all.

And the whole ambiance is just stunning.

I wouldn't think an alligator would be lurking in such a tranquil setting but it IS Florida after all.
However if the lake is man-made then how in the world did an alligator get inside.

I'm from the West Coast so please excuse my ignorance on this!

And people are claiming there are "No Swimming" signs posted & if that is the case, perhaps the parents ignored them or didn't see them.
Or perhaps they witnessed other people swimming and joined.

Regardless this is the second child being taken by an alligator so far this month.

My heart breaks for these families....the pain + sorrow they feel I cannot even imagine.

Poor Orlando too.
They are having a very cursed month so far.

No, you're misunderstanding. No one was swimming. The family was NEAR the water at a Disney-sanctioned event. The alligator got out of the water and took the child.

There's a different side to Disney. See, e.g., tbe abandoned River Country and old Discovery Island.

From all I've read, the child was wading in shallow water. Parents are often (understandably) uninformed about safety near water, alligators, wildlife etc. It's like all the kids I see playing in the surf at dusk along the Florida coast where there have been shark sightings. Too many tourists aren't specifically warned (with signs) about the dangers.

We're still going in July, taking our two girls.

I just don't understand why they don't have says posted everywhere warning people about gators.

On disney's private island in the Bahamas, they have multiple signs along the beach warning of all the myriad sea life in the water followed by "swim at your own risk." It's a laundry list of sea life that includes sea lice. You'd think they would do the same at disney world. It never occurred to me to worry about gators at magic kingdom or the boardwalk. Never.

After reading disboards last night---which including a million posts from people who have seen gators all over the resort---I have no desire to go back to disney. Lots of posts about gators in Hilton head and other areas as well. I think I'll stick to my local beaches and those further north from now on.

that's your response to this tragedy? are you the spawn of trump?

I guess, and no. Gators will eat what they eat. Keep kids away and they won't get eaten.

Why would anyone expect gators to be at disney? How would you know to take precautions at an amusement park or resort?

They spray for mosquitoes but don't remove gators? WTF?

I'm PP, and why would a 2-yr-old be on a beach at 9:30 pm?

There is a lot wrong with you PP.

The bodies of water at Disney are connected to other bodies of water.
Disney did not ship in the alligators. They are in their natural setting.
In fact, reports are that if an alligator over a given size is spotted, they relocate that gator.

This was a very, very tragic accident. Nobody is at fault.
I cannot imagine what this family is going through.

If there were no signs saying "Warning alligators," yes, Disney is at fault.

Wrong. Disney is at fault. Signs should be posted everywhere.

Disney will pay through the nose. Every family that witnessed the attack and was traumatized will sue. Then signs will be posted everywhere.

The news articles I've read all have conflicting info on whether or not the boy was wading in the water.

Are we certain that no signs are posted?
