I am a DC uberX driver since 2013 and have SEEN IT ALL...so please, AMA

Dude you're awesome. This is my all time favorite AMA. Ok, second favorite after two-dick dude.

Would you advice a woman to be an Uber driver? The money sure sounds awesome but I would worry about being attacked.

This a tough one. It bears repeating, men are fucking dogs. When you have a male rider, some will use it as free reign to gauge you in any way they can sexually because they have you captive right there with them. Sorry to be so blunt, but female drivers talk about it often. You can combat it by driving hours in the daytime...brunch from 9am to 3pm is a terrific time to drive. You can also screen the requests to only pick up riders with obviously female names, but this could hurt your driver stats on accepting rides in the long run.

Personally, I wouldn't want my wife, daughter, or mom driving uberX because things can simply happen. It'd take the rare female with a really firm personality to be really successful at it.

I've never taken Uber and am really enjoying this AMA. Thanks, op. It's eye opening.

Good luck with the long term home goal.

I've lived here a long time. If something goes on in DC / Northern VA, I probably know a little bit about it. I've browsed DCUM since 2009-ish, no clue how I found it, and I mostly frequent Relationships, Money & Finance, Jobs & Careers, and Off-Topic. I also browse reddit.com/r/washingtondc & nova, popville, dcist, Greater Greater Washington, arlNOW, and Fairfax Underground. They all help to know what's up around town and current events happening.

Do you listen in on people's conversations as you drive?

Have you seen drug deals happen? What do you do with that, or obviously underage drunk people (or other illegal things, I guess?)

iPhone 6s. I'm a pro with the phone. I can work the app and text without looking. I can do about 90% of the trips in DC, Arlington, & Alexandria without using the GPS. Getting really, really good with operating the app is big key to success. You gotta be quick and make snap judgments.

I mean it's in one and ear and out the other, but I do hear. People do this thing when they're inside a paid ride called "cabbie treatment" almost by instinct. It's as if I am deaf and invisible. People will say anything and everything without any filter whatsoever, ESPECIALLY ON THE PHONE. Worst convo to overhear? a break-up/fight...ughhhhhhhhhhhh

Yes, totally, all the time. As in, I pick up a rider and we go to the ATM, then go to dealer's house to get the goods, and then take them back home. In DC I absolutely do not care...weed's legal and it's not a crime. Surge doesn't matter to ppl jonesing for a fix, lol. I highly doubt it's ever anything harder than pot. And I've done the reverse...driving a dealer all over DC making stops to deliver. Pot culture in DC is kinda wild nowadays with the practical legalization at this point.

What do I do? I take anyone where they need to go safely and then watch the fruits of my labor flow into my bank account.

Because it truly is. It's really not a job, it's a game. The harder you work along with the smarter you work, the more you make. If you come out and dilly-dally around town all day, you WILL NOT make any money and it'll a total waste of your time.

Passenger rating means absolutely nothing. Don't worry about it. About the only way to lose your uber privileges as a rider is to physically assault a driver. I'm sure you're 5-stars all the way in my book.

+1

Thanks for starting this, OP.

Drivers DO NOT see your destination. If they did, there would be a lot more cancellations, because not every trip would be advantageous/profitable to the driver. If I'm out working, my mantra is always "I'm driving absolutely anywhere this person wants to go", but a lot of asshole drivers don't share this attitude. If a driver calls you before pick-up, he's likely fishing for your destination. Some drivers are big enough dicks that they'll cancel your ride when they see your destination upon starting the ride isn't to their benefit, when you're already in the car with them. Pitch a fit if this ever happens to you.

The perfect uber ride involves zero texts and zero phone calls...they're absolutely not necessary. Go ahead and feel free to put your destination in prior to the driver's arrival because it makes everything much smoother once you're in the car and ready to roll.

Can you see how we rate you?

This thread is awesome. And props to you and your hustle. A lot of folks around here have lots of education and zero hustle! I love uber and use it about three times a week. I do feel though that lately I get more and more drivers who really have no clue how to get around DC even with GPS.i can see how these guys might lose money if they spend half the day lost.
Capitolism at its finest! Keep busting your ass and good luck getting that house.

Nope, they'll never know. Only a noob driver would ever care about their rating. My 4.91 is so solid after thousands of rides that it'd take dozens of ones to knock it down a hundredth.

PLEASE RATE ACCORDINGLY! Giving an honest rating keeps good drivers on the road and cuts out the bad ones.

There are only two numbers you should ever use for rating drivers: 5 or 1. Ask yourself after the ride "Would I ride with this person again?" If yes, then 5. If no, then 1.

+1. I'm curious about Uber, but find taxis meet my needs. Why is Uber better?

I LOVE your thread! I wish I could hire you as my Uber driver; keep up the hustle!

My questions:

-- How do you keep drivers from talking to you? Sometimes, I just want to stare out the window and go over a presentation for work in my head, not chat about where everyone's from.
-- Who was the weirdest rider you ever had and why?
-- Which university in the DC area has the best/worst riders?
