Wives, do you fold and put away your husband's laundry?

Anonymous
I cannot speak to folding, but I will say as a DH that I don't do laundry. Period.

I do many MANY other things in the house, but laundry is something I just don't do. Because I've been criticized one too many times by DW for how I do it (example -- I tend to mix dark clothes together, so blacks, reds, navy, hunter green all go in the same wash -- she insists you have to do it by color.)

I've been kind of wondering about these SAHMs who don't do all the laundry. If my husband was the only one working, I'd consider keeping his work clothes clean and organized to be part of my contribution to his success. If I were the only one working, I'd certainly expect such a "foundational" home chore to be taken care of by my husband.

I'm a sahm and my husband likes doing his laundry. Not rocket science. He also likes loading the dishwasher. I think it's great modeling for our son. We're Arab and this is rare in our culture !

I have always washed/dried/folded/put away all the laundry, though the 11-year-old and 7-year-old have started to put away their own clothes. But the PP who said folding is a great way to watch TV for an hour while still being productive is right. Married 18 years, work part-time, married to a husband who works 60-hour weeks with a ton of travel. He was terrible at laundry so it's my job. He's a much better cook than I am so he does most of that.

Nope. Doing my own laundry and the kid's laundry is enough. But, dh laundry does pile up and it gets annoying. And the several times I did his laundry, the colors ran. Forget it. My laundry is simple, I dump it all in the same washer, i don't separate anything. Same with the my son. I do teach my son to bring the laundry to washer, put it in. And take out from dryer and fold them.

I do all the chores at our house. DH makes a lot of money so it's fair.

the bolded part holds true in our house. i WOH and do the laundry for the family. I don't mind folding as that gives me an excuse to go to the guest room and watch trashy TV on the 55' TV we put in there. Then everyone has to find their own stuff that is neatly in folded piles to put away in their own dressers and closets. Sometimes I help my husband out, but only his underwear and t-shirts as those are easy to put away.

Huh your wife sounds OCD. It's fine to wash different colours together. You're just not supposed to mix them with whites. Wth

I would imagine the people who leave clothes around in big piles look very wrinkly.

The rest of us who share folding duties, less so.

Woa. Your wife is weird. Your water bill must be crazy.

I think this is something where the couple needs to decide what works best for their situation & people shouldn't judge others for doing it differently.
DH and I each do our own laundry - washing, folding, put away. I don't even know which drawers he keeps shirts, pants, etc in. We both work out of the home. I do all laundry for our 3 young kids.

I do the laundry and fold it. He puts it away. He cooks most night (I crockpot 1-2 time a week) and does yard work. I manage kids events and activities, etc. (the family calendar). The maid does the heavy cleaning. When we got married, we didn't divide like this, and had time to cook together, etc, but 17 years and 2 kids later, w/ 2 parents working FT professional jobs, we have fallen into the pattern of each person does the the things they are better at/ chores by area of strength. We need a divide and conquer mentality to keep the house running.

+1 Our kids are now grown, but you've pretty much described our way as well.

Ex Husband here
I split the laundry, fold clothes, dishes and I do all the cooking 95% of the time mainly coz I'm the better cook and I'm the breadwinner. Ex works fulltime but don't make nearly as much as I do. I don't know I just don't want her to do the stuff herself or feel obligated just because I make more.
I'm dating a girl much younger than I now and she thinks my ex is crazy for letting me go. Actually the truth is I let her go.

LOL.

My DH also makes a lot of money. And he's not a child. We both share the chores that we don't outsource.

I do tend to wash his clothes because I'm picky about it (not work clothes - those are all dry clean) but he puts his own clothes away. My kids put their clothes away too.
