Spelling in FCPS

Are you referring to something such as this? http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/pdfs/famework/Grade5.pdf

If you are referring to something else, could you please link me to the materials to which you are referring?

Huh? My 3d grader in FCPS has had "word study" since K. It's phonetics and spelling, as well as ensuring they understand the vocabulary. We are also starting cursive in November.

You're either stretching the truth or your school is not representative of FCPS overall.

I think the PP is exactly right. Our school stops teaching spelling, grammar, and writing after the 3rd grade. Maybe it's you who is stretching the truth?

Yeah. You got me. I love lying to prove a point to some anonymous person a message board. Especially one to intent on being miserable. Our experience in FCPS has been generally positive. Sorry if that doesn't fit your narrative.

My "narrative" is simply my family's own experience with FCPS. Glad yours has been positive, but you seem to imply anyone with a negative experience must be "stretching the truth". It'd be nice if you could stop trying to dismiss the experiences of others, especially if they don't fit your pep rally view of this school system.

I call it like I see it. You were the one saying that FCPS does not teach these things anymore. Across the board. You could not possible know that b/c it's not true. That's stretching the truth.

No, I'm the PP who said our elementary school doesn't teach these things after the 3rd grade. And since many others have said the same things about their experiences, then it seems you/your school might just be in the minority.

This is not true.

Fairfax County has a "Program of Studies," which has standards that are essential or expected, and extensions that are expected to be taught in honors and AAP. There is not, however, a standard curriculum for either general education or AAP. There are standards and benchmarks, but no curriculum.

I wrote the above quote and what I meant by it is that AAP for each grade has a list of recommended materials for each school to buy to use in the AAP program. General Ed is a free for all in terms of what teachers may use as materials. I was talking about materials (workbooks), not standards.

This is still not true. I teach AAP and must find/develop ALL the curricula on my own, based on the FCPS POS. Standard workbooks/materials are neither recommended nor provided to me as a teacher.

I collaborate with other AAP teachers throughout the county, and the same is true for them, as well. We share ideas with one another, but that is as close as we get to a "list of recommended materials."

Perhaps some areas/pyramids have a list of recommended materials, but that is certainly not the case across the county.

So are you saying that not all AAP centers have access to Ceaser's English or Wordly Wise or William and Mary curricula? They don't all have access to teach Latin stems? The teachers were not all given training in these curricula?

Please. There is some level of consistency with AAP curricula. You can argue not exact, but much more consistency then regular Gen Ed classes where the amount of good learning and teaching is at the whim and mercy of the teacher. There is NOTHING consistent in Gen Ed L.A.

I wonder if the schools aren't teaching these things or if it's a case of the schools not teaching these things the way you want them to be taught. That's what I'm reading in some of these posts.

Well for example, our school said in 2nd grade that they graded spelling through the child's writing. It's very possible the teacher did grade the spelling, yet the child never got any of this feedback other than the number grade. Also, the writing assignments were on a monthly basis so a child only met with the teacher on the writing assignment once or twice month. We would get the drafts and the finals home and there wasn't even one spelling correction all year. So how does any of this really teach a child spelling? We had to supplement to teach spelling because at our school the teachers know that the parents will just supplement for areas they don't teach.

Yes, this is what I was referring to. There is no similar list for general ed.

Same experience here. I agree, I think the teachers know the parents will just supplement, so they don't bother teaching it anymore.

The original post in this thread (above) is not limited to "after the 3d grade."

That's correct. We do not have access to Caesar's English, Wordly Wise, or William and Mary curricula in middle school AAP. OF COURSE we have "access" to teach Greek and Latin roots, but the materials we use are all ones we've found online or have created ourselves.

In middle school, there is far more consistency within general education than it sounds as if there is in elementary school general education. In fact, it sounds as if it is the opposite of what you are saying happens in ES. General education is so consistent that students can change teachers and will have the exact same grades, worksheets, quizzes, tests, and writing assignments. That is not even remotely true in AAP.
