Spelling in FCPS

Hello,
Is spelling not being taught in FCPS? My DC is in 2nd grade and so far I have not seen any spelling study. Is this the case thoughout FCPS? Thanks |

Nothing is taught in fcps anymore - not spelling, not handwriting, not how to write a coherent essay...

| Umm, my second grader in FCPS has spelling words each week. He got the first set about a month ago. And got words each week all of first grade as well. (And trust me, he needs spelling words!) |

| OP here. My older one has always had spelling study. Now in 7th grade. Younger one had none and she is a horrible speller. Can't spell what or where!!! Does great in math though! I had asked the first grade teacher during the parent teacher meeting and she told me that they are not teaching spelling words anymore. It sounded like it was what FCPS was doing. |

| My DS's 1st and 2nd grade class only did word study during the day and had no tests. They did have spelling/word study groups though. So we just used spelling city and tested at home. It makes no sense not to teach spelling in some grades at least. By 4th grade, the kids aren't even doing word study anymore. I don't see why FCPS can't teach spelling/word study in at least the younger grades. |

Spelling is taught, it probably isn't taught in isolation. It might not look the same as when you and I were in school. By that, I mean most students probably aren't receiving a list of words to memorize for the week and then tested on Friday. Many teachers teach spelling through the writing process.
Look at the progress report. What standard do you see graded? It is "Edits for usage and mechanics in writing". |

| My now 6th grader has had no spelling or grammar instruction since 3rd grade. As a result, her spelling is abysmal. Thanks, FCPS. |
