| Honestly, there are so few spots in the charter schools, that chances are you won't get your child in, so I wouldn't worry about it until you have to. |
| I do not have time or interest in being friends with people who: insist global warming is false, want to blow up Obama Care, think being gay is wrong, and believe everyone should be carrying around guns. |
+1000000000. i kind of love whoever posted this. |
I think you meant Dick Berry ? |
Oops. |

I can't tell you how many times Republicans have said things to me about how my Hispanic family "takes jobs away from real Americans". I send my kids to a very HRCS that is immersion. I do not think that many Republicans would be interested in the "language of the poors" (to quote another DCUM poster from a few weeks back) unless they happen to be running for president.
And yes I know there are quite a few Latinos who vote Republican for reasons I don't understand. But most of those live in Miami, thank goodness. |
I love you, "Oops" PP. |
liberal here. I don't understand how any of this impacts a day-to-day friendship. I agree global warming exists, that obama care is better than no obama care, that there is nothing wrong about being gay, and that easy access to guns is a factor in causing violence. BUT someone can believe the opposite and still be a lovely, kind, empathetic person, and a great mother and friend. Yes, all this stuff is important, but it pales when compared to the importance of a person's temperament and humor and acceptance of me as a friend and support of me as a mother. |

Silliest thread ever.
Bring on the Republicans in DC Charter. The college admissions situation will surely accrue the benefit. Mushy-minded liberals have a great way of tamping down rigor and setting back good planning in the name of fairness. |
So if someone is nice to you, it doesn't matter that their politics oppress others? |
Not the PP, but I don't particularly care if a person I make pleasant chit-chat with (or even have over to my house for dinner) is, e.g., anti-abortion or anti gay marriage, though I disagree with them on that. I wouldn't vote people with those beliefs into office, but I fail to see why I cannot find them pleasant to interact with if we have polite conversations and mutual interests. Seriously, must everyone be a clone of each other? |
I guarantee you know a Republican. I have met people like you who: 1. Are shocked when they find I am a Republican because they assume someone like me would be "smarter" than that. 2. Try to convince me I am not a Republican. And for the record, I don't insist global warming is false but may not agree with you on what is causing it. I don't want to blow up Obama Care but am open for a system which isn't government based, I don't think being gay is wrong nor am I against gay marriage (though I am against the government forcing business owners to make cakes for certain people), I don't believe everyone should be carrying around guns especially those who can't pass a background check, are criminals or don't have a license to own a firearm. |
They don't see their politics as oppressing others. I do. They see my politics as oppressing others (tax and regulatory burden). I don't. But what people believe politically and religiously often has no bearing on their value as a person. My evangelical social conservative friend has a gay brother (who is also a republican though obviously not a social conservative one). They have a wonderful supportive loving relationship. She is a good brother to him and a good friend to her left winger friend (that would be me). |
wut? |
And yet you vote for people who do think global warming is false, want to blow up ObamaCare, think being gay is wrong, are against gay marriage and think everyone should be able to carry guns regardless. Again, why is that? I think Republicans like you cling to the idea of the GOP because you think it's the party of rich, successful people. Maybe it was, once. Today, it's the party of uneducated, Bible-thumping racists who want to tell other people who they can love and what they can and can't do with their bodies. I realize those people are a tiny minority, but they choose who your candidates are, so your candidates have to cater to their fringe agenda. I realize most registered Republicans are perfectly nice, normal people. I just think they are selfish people, because they vote for lunatics just to save a few bucks in taxes. |
