Moving to NOVA from out of state, where would you move in NOVA? up to 1.6 mm house budget

Why would OP want to spend her housing budget to compete with people who need to commute to DC? I'd cross Arlington off my list very quickly. It's not very nice, but people put up with it to be near DC.

There are many options for OP - I am not pushing Arlington at all. In fact, I posted about Vienna earlier - seems like a good fit. But WTF is up with the Arlington haters.

-Arlington person who has worked in Herndon for 8+ years. I could never live out that way myself, but know many people who do enjoy it.

I don't understand Vienna. The commute from Reston to Vienna can be quite long. I live in Herndon - right across the street from Reston, and my dentist is in Oakton. My drive to get to his office is one hour each way. You really need to test out the commute if you choose Vienna and work in Reston. I agree with others that Reston/Herndon/Great Falls would be the place to look. Commutes in and out of Reston can be pretty bad because Route 7 gets very backed up and congested.

It's not bad if you head up Lawyers toward the Toll Rd though??? Why would you even get on Rt 7?

Don't bother with anything in Arlington. Expensive, overrated, and poor value for the money for anyone working in Reston.

It's a reverse commute to Reston, and if there are children in the school system, Arlington fits the bill for most of what the OP is looking for. There are amazing sports, after school activities and enrichments, and an amazing community feel in all the schools. Not to mention tons of restaurants across all cultures and tastes.

I agree with first PP. Don't bother with Arlington. It's still a very long commute even if it's "reverse commute". Buy closer to Reston, it's newer and affordable. Arlington homes are just too, too old.

Really don't like the snark here. OP is probably long gone and now has an awful view of people here. There are so many great places to live. I don't understand why the Arlington people keep pushing Arlington, though. I am sure it is a terrific place to live--but, people, this is NOVA. Commutes are awful--even reverse commutes. Parts of Vienna are fine for commutes--but the heart of Vienna would be terrible. No need to condemn Arlington--if I worked in the district, that is where I would live, if I had the money. But, the Arlington community doesn't need to act like Reston is the backwater. The people who think that shopping and ethnic restaurants are exclusive to Arlington need to take a drive--but do it on the weekend when the traffic is a little more bearable.

Yup. People here just like to tear other people down just to boost their egos. DC sucks.

Who said Reston is the backwater?

p.s. traffic sucks on weekends too!

I live in Arlington.. the only reason I would highlight all the pros is simply because I'm not familiar with other areas at all. I moved here several years ago and haven't had the opportunity to explore other cities aside of the occasional adventure. Certainly I'm not one to treat Reston as a second-class city, I just simply don't know much about it.

Arlington homes are too, too old?? Really - have you driven around Arlington in the last few years? At $1.6M, the OP can get a gorgeous, new construction house. Tradition Homes, BCN are great builders in that price range that have a lot going on in Arlington.

Arlington to Reston why? That is a long commute. SW Vienna to Reston is far also.

True. I'm a PP who said the commute from Vienna to Reston wasn't bad, but I now realize I didn't specify it's not bad from NE Vienna (you can take Beulah or Lawyers, depending on which road is flooded or blocked by a fallen tree).

OP, not sure if you are still reading but I'd look into 20148 (Ashburn) zoned for Eagle Ridge Middle/Briar Woods High. Something like the Village of Waxpool or you could custom build in Evergreen Reserve.

Or alternatively you could look where I live in Sterling (20165)/cascades area or Great Falls. These two would have a shorter drive to Reston.
