Why do we feed teachers for "staff appreciation" when we have so many families below poverty level?

I rather thank my kid's teachers than continue to enable those that have bad spending habits, make poor life decisions and feed off the government teet all their lives.

And when I used to go into to volunteer making copies or helping in computer lab the teachers were not friendly. If my coworkers or neighbors were like that I would call them rude. Maybe years of being under appreciated. Just very strange to me the overall attitude, not every teacher, a few were polite but more were not. Now kids in high school and middle school and teachers seem to be normal/friendly.

Maybe your chili isn't that good. Or maybe the teachers at that school just aren't chili fans. Or maybe elementary teachers are overworked and are "in the zone", especially when they're in the copy room and trying to figure out how to make their copies on a barely functioning machine, go to the bathroom, shovel down part of their lunch, contact a parent and attend a mandatory data chat before picking their class up from the cafeteria.

Or maybe they're just all rude people. Or maybe you feel you deserve everyone to fawn over you for making a pot of chil and volunteering a few times a year. Do you expect accolades every time you do something nice?
Sounds like you are one of those bitchy teachers that PP is referring too. There is no excuse to not say thank you to someone who goes out of their way to show appreciation. PP wasn't making a big deal of it and it makes no difference if the chili was good or not. The fact that you reference it shows have pathetically rude YOU are.

I'm the PP you quoted. I'm not a teacher but family members are. I've also spent lots of time volunteering in my child's school and see how things work. The teachers at my kid's school always express thanks when parents do something nice for them. But there are also those parents who make a big production out of providing food or giving gifts and it's usually some kind of competition with other parents over who does the most. It's a strange dynamic.

Teachers are paid very fairly (on par with most other well-paid professionals when you compare hour-to-hour), have great work schedules, and good job stability. I am sick of their martyrdom and everyone else's putting them on a pedestal.

I'm curious. I'm a teacher. I make $80K for 11 months of 60 hours a week, so the equivalent of another profession which pays around $88K for 12 months.

I read on DCUM all the time about how salaries under $100K aren't "middle class". Which other professions do you consider "well-paid" which require advanced degrees, professional certifications, consistent unpaid overtime, and pay under $100K for someone with 20+ years of experience, in this area?

You are not contracted for 60 hours a week. Get serious. Other professions put in hours "after hours" too. And where do you work that you're 11 months a year at 60 hours a week? BS.

PERFECT example of martyrdom.

I don't understand what the issue is. The school provides free lunch and breakfast for students that are eligible, and does blessings in a backpack for weekends/holidays etc. It isn't as though kids are going hungry because high SES parent funds are going to the one or two teacher appreciation events a year.

I agree but I guess people think we should be clothing and feeding them 24/7. It is crazy.
