Why do people look down at Disney?

Because in The Magic Kingdom your wallet will be empty in just an eye blink.

Never take your children to places where they return home dumber than when they left.

+1. Beautiful. just beautiful. We haven’t had time for Disney. Dc is now 15. I’m thinking if DC wants to do it, he/she can go on their own when they’re adults. Meanwhile, too many more satisfying experiences in the world to be had.

You can do both. I've never been but we are taking our kids for a four day weekend soon and we are doing it relatively cheaply (the hotel and flights are no where near as expensive as stated by PP). We will also take them on trips to other places this spring and summer.

OP here. I thought there were so many better places to visit in the world - France, Spain, Greece, Italy, China, Thailand, Japan, etc. Life is drastically different with young children. I hope to pick up better travel once the kids are older.

No kidding, and we did the math, it's almost the same cost to travel to Europe as a week at Disney!!

can you show me your math?

OP here. Our trips have been 4-5 nights but I can do the math for the previous poster who does the full week at Disney.

Flights for a family of 4 - $1200
Disney Tickets - $2000
7 nights at Deluxe Hotel - $4200
Food/Souvenirs - $3000

You could take a trip to Europe for $10k.

We priced out Disney last year and decided to do a week in Provence with the kids instead.

I LOVE Disney! If you can't have fun at Disney with your children, then you are doing it wrong. Serious parenting fail. World travel, cultural experiences, the arts.... And Disney are not mutually exclusive. You don't have to choose. Despite what you may think, you are not too good for Disney.

In the words of the great Homer Simpson, "I enjoy all the meats in our cultural stew".

^ I should add that I don't hate Disney - went there often growing up. We did go once with my kids when they were young but the lines and crowds were a huge pain. And then when I priced it out again more recently I just couldn't justify spending that much money on an amusement park.

I do think we'll go again at some point, but not regularly. There are too many other places to see.

I don't think that is true. My son just doesn't love rides all that much, and gets tense in crowds. We went and it was ok, but by no means one of the greatest vacations of our lives. We had just as much fun renting a condo at the beach the following year.

What? Who cares how others feel about Disney or other places. We are going in 2 weeks!
Family lives near by so we'll accomplish 2 things.

You are the exception, not the norm.

I love Disney, but I don't think this is true. Lots of people find WDW very overwhelming. It's huge and it's over-stimulating for many people.

The people who hate disney fall into these camps: can't afford it, don't enjoy spending time with their kids, and/or take a bizarre philosophical stance against commercialism and corporate America (without recognizing how other things they do supports corporate America).

This is stupid. I don't like Disney but I totally get why other people do. This doesn't mean I don't want to spend time with my children. I'd just rather spend time with them somewhere else.

yes. national parks, zoos, summer camps, dude ranch in Kansas - some of the stuff we’ve done. Spoke to other parents at a jungle lodge in Belize -- none had been to Disney and all agreed they real didn’t care for amusement parks.

I can see both sides here -- for what it's worth Disney is just such big place and Orlando-ecosystem I think you really need to do your homework to make it work well for you.

You do hear the judgement in there about folks who do like amusement parks don't you? The implication that your preferences are superior?

Took the kids to Disney World and I'm a total convert. They LOVED it. It was so kid-centric, so well managed, and so entertaining that I actually want to return. I could force my six and four year old to enjoy the quaint culture of an old European city or explain to them the finer points of bushing teeth using only bottles water, but at this age, Disney is the way to go.

While we were there, we met up with a former classmate of my child and her family. It was for the Halloween party, and both parents showed up in full costume - really good ones that required time and effort - and proceeded to have a ton of fun. At first I thought it a little odd that these adults were acting like children, but it occurred to me that they were having a BLAST with their kids. Everyone enjoyed it. No one stopped appreciating fine art, exotic travel, or great literature as a result of their temporary foray into Disney fun.

So - my two cents is that people look down on Disney because they'd like to believe themselves better or more cultured than others. I on the other hand think they look down on Disney because they're just way too uptight. Go on a roller coaster and scream it out - you'll feel better!

My two cents? Your reading comprehension isn't great. Numerous posters have said the same thing: it's a corporate vacation. I don't like mega corporations getting money from my family.

Well that's silly. Do you fly private jets to your other locations? Do you not shop at Target, etc. for your packing items? Unless you don't, then stop acting so superior.
