It turns out she was a fraud. Just surprised no one has posted this.

I came in to say this.... The whole platform is suspect and they haven't released any data to be publically scrutinized. They are running LDTs which do not have to go through FDA clearance. You can have all the patents you want but let's see if the have a viable product.

The idea that one can do 30 assays from 25 uL of whole blood is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

So, what - the tests they claim to do are bullshit? http://www.walgreens.com/pharmacy/lab-testing/home.jsp

Turns out, yes.

They were all bullshit.

I re read the original Fortune article in th OP which now has a retraction.

I think she had an amazing vision but she should have stayed in school to understand the science well enough to realize what the limitations of her vision were and determine whether there were plausible solutions. It's like she had a dream of going to the moon without understanding that we need oxygen to breathe. She was given a message that girls can do anything - that being successful for women means pushing through the barriers posed by a society that favours success in males.

I think there are two messages to send to kids - stay in school and never lie because it will eventually catch up with you.

In the end being female might have done her in - she enlisted exclusively the support of old white men on her board who probably saw her as their grand daughter. None of them questioned her, challengd her, they just wanted to spoil her the way grandparents do. Had she been male, the Fortune reporter who originally told her story would have pushed her to clarify the vague responses she was giving. He handled her with kid gloves as did everyone else.

You do realize this woman is no longer a billionaire right? And her whole operation has basically been called a fraud . She was a billionaire on paper ONLY

Jobs wasn't poor if he was adopted and went to Reed. Weren't his parents lawyers? Not sure about Woz's background.

Jobs parents weren't exactly UMC either

Zuckerburg, Bill Gates, this lady, what do they all have in common? They came from affluent families. I can't tell you the last time I read about some technology titan who came from nothing or was born poor, or at least working class. Of course you're going to be able to make the most out of your brilliance if your parents are paying for summer Mandarin courses at Stanford. But I wonder, would a girl like this whose parents *couldn't* afford Stanford, or all of that enrichment, would she have been able to make it as far as she has? Is that the country we live in now? Do we like it this way? By no means do I want to diminish this woman's accomplishments and I think she is fabulous, but there was this nagging feeling as I read the article about everything her parents had done for her, and how all of her professors and teachers saw this brilliance in her, and it made me think "but what if she was poor?" If her parents were working two shifts or barely making ends meet and they lived in a not-so-great school district, would anyone have seen that brilliance? Would anyone have cared? And how many brilliant kids with world-changing ideas are we losing as a result?

Bingo

I watched/read all the WSJ stories as this whole mess unfolded... she was just WAY WAY over her head in all things.

How did she think she would get away with this long term? Is she a sociopath?

Right. If people don't post about it on DCUm, it means they haven't read about it.

Wait. You didn't post about it, either.

Anonymous wrote:Hey Debbie Downer, her father is a fed and her mother is a congressional staffer! Not exactly uber-rich, especially by DCUM standards.

"Her father, Christian Holmes IV, has devoted most of his life to public-minded government service–disaster relief in Africa, international development projects in China, environmental work in this country–and is currently the global water coordinator for the U.S. Agency for International Development. He met Elizabeth’s mother, Noel, on Capitol Hill, where she worked as a congressional committee staffer."

He went on to work in the private sector when they moved to Texas. He didn't remain a Fed.

So none of you actually read the article? Her family are descendants of the Fleishmann yeast fortune. Educated parents working in civil device and likely an affluent family going way back. She is doing great meaningful work, but not self made in I sorry. On top of the great great grandfather who was a surgeon and World War I hero. She is the latest on a long line of a successful family, but her accomplishments are mostly a result of upbringing and likely resources few of us can match.

Some of us did read it and knew about her years ago. She ever clearly states how her father choose to devote to public service, choose being a great word, not worked as a public servant, she is clearly from a wealthy background. But, still her achievements are inspiring, she could have spent her time like Paris Hilton...

What is so inspiring about fraud with the potential to jeopardize people's lives?
