i know it is a favorite, but anyone else underwhelmed by Mundo Verde open house?

Compared to the $1,100 I was paying for daycare, $400 sounds like a relief!

But, I would urge you to talk to current parents and find out what they think. MV has a very high re-enrollment rate, which indicates that parents are happy. My children have amazing, dedicated teachers, and we have a great parent community.

I disagree with the above poster that MV is trying to do to much and is not focused. The administration and academic leadership are very committed to the expeditionary learning system and do a great job of making learning fun and interesting for children. In addition, unlike a couple of other schools mentioned, MV has a good aftercare program.

Doesn't MV aftercare cost around $400 month compared to $200- $300 at most schools?

Many of the new charters have aftercare fees in this range.

Good way to weed out lower middle class families on non-profit salaries who aren't FARMS but can't shell out that kind of money, either.

There is "mid-level" for families in exactly that income range. Not sure what the exact income range is, but the cost is $252 a month. It's right on the website, there is a link here with the schedule of fees.

http://mundoverdepcs.org/extended-day/

No info there about what the income cutoff is. I imagine it's well below 100k, though.

You are probably right. No one is forcing anyone to do the aftercare program. If you don't feel it is worth the money, you can arrange for separate care for your child.

+1. Whiners go home.

"Separate care"? You mean a nanny for $15-$20 an hour? How am I supposed to afford that?
Thanks, but I'll stick with my public school where the aftercare is under $300/month.

I know what's next, of course... I should have researched all this years ago and concluded that on my non-profit salary, I could not afford to have children.

I'm not the PP you were responding to, but I left the non-profit sector because I needed to make more money to pay for daycare! I feel your pain.

The new building will probably be just as bad...

Not to mention that drug ridden, filthy neighborhood (I don't care how much the houses cost and that homeless shelter/soup kitchen around the corner.

totally agree. new location will be awful and the school sucks. whatever you do DO NOT apply!!!

(pp, our cunning plan may work!)

And the ridiculously expensive aftercare (a conspiracy to keep out poor... No, middle class families who don't get a discount).

Don't apply. You will hate MV!

I know someone whose kid started in second grade Spanish. I was called for third grade French, but did not take it.

Did your child know some French, to be able to join that class, and did they inquire about your kid's French skills at all?

No, no prior French instruction required.

PP who used to pay the sliding scale, can you speak to what the cutoff is in order to qualify?

Who staffs MV's aftercare?

It is all in house. Each class has two teachers, most of whom speak primarily Spanish but a few are English. Then each day a specials teacher takes over for an hour. These are the regular specials teachers so art during the day and art during aftercare is tight by the same person and cooking/gardening is taught by the regular cooking gardening teacher etc. So the lessons flow with with the schoolday lessons. We have loved every one of the aftercare teachers our child has had. Some from earlier years have been promoted to teachers assistant during the day, and one particularly great one was promoted first to teachers assistant and then to lead teacher, I believe.

Note that many of these same teachers run the summer camp so that too flows with the general curriculum, but with even more field trips and running around time.

I wish Yu Ying did this! There is a reduced FARMS rate, but not aware of any mid-level or sliding rates.

The YY reduced rate isn't just for FARMS families--the cutoff for that rate is higher than the cutoff rate for FARMS. (We qualified for the reduced rate last year.)

Yu Ying & Mundo verde posters who qualified for reduced rate that are not FARMS: what do you have to make to qualify?

the same sentiment was extended at the school fair at ward 5 why even bother

The presentation was fine. It was the other parents who were the problem. Ok, you can't or didn't get a babysitter so you had to bring your kid. I understand. But couldn't you have told your kid (and there were maybe 5 of them) to stop running around so the other parents could hear the presentation?

YY reduced rate family: for a family of 4, the cutoff is $59k/year (for a family of 5, it's 69k; for a family of 3 it's $48k, going up & down @ basically $10k per person added/subtracted from each family).

Thanks for posting this.

So a family of four, two kids, both parents work full time, with a HHI of $70K/year is expected to pay over $400/mo per kid for aftercare.
Clearly this shuts out many families from schools like YY and MV.
