Email about pool letters

However you phrase it seems like this is more about you then your kid. Scores to settle perhaps? Or will you be in class with your third grader? Otherwise, don't the race or fun part.

Call it what you like, this is a "every man for himself" situation.

There is no limit on the number of students found Center eligible. The central screening committee is looking for reasons that students should be found Center eligible, and not the reverse (looking to exclude). Therefore, it is not a "race" or "every man for himself" situation.

Huh? The quoted email from Louise Archer above says that the meeting is this Tues. The referrals were originally due 2/3 (which is after that meeting date) and now are due 2/7 (which is also after that meeting date). Grab a calendar, friend.

Um, yeah. But I'm not at Louise Archer. And our school hasn't said *anything* about *any* meeting. If the school is going to be helpful to parents in terms of preparing a referral, they need to get a date on the calendar quickly so that people can a) make time in their schedules for the meeting, and b) have some time to get letters together, etc.

I'm not even complaining for myself; I've been to those meetings in the past, and my kid is in-pool. so it doesn't matter to me this year. However, I was in a different position a few years ago, and I know that having the meeting well in advance of the referral deadline gave me time to get specific info from the AART and arrange for all the letters of recommendation. Despite the posted info from the county, I was clueless about what would really help in the packet; the AART steered me away from some material I would have included, which was very helpful.

Sorry, you're still confusing. How in the world does having a meeting before the due-date help you have time to get letters together, etc.? Those on this board already know about letter due-dates. Oh - and all schools I know of have an informational meeting in the fall. So this is a second, supplemental meeting. This isn't' the first and only meeting days before a deadline.

I fail to see why this is so confusing. FCPS gives you a deadline for material. The meeting gives you more specifics about what material you should submit, some of which you might need to collect from other people. So...probably best to have the meeting well before the deadline, right? Hardly a confusing concept.

The meetings (in my experience) are very helpful in terms of specifics re the GBRS, what types of work samples are helpful for the packet, etc. I went to the fall meeting one year, too, and they certainly didn't talk about how to do a referral at that point--it was just basics about AAP and Level III vs the center.

Believe or not, there are people who don't hang out on message boards who would still like and deserve this information. If the info posted by FCPS was enough, we would not have page after page of postings here asking if letters from soccer coaches and participation certificates were OK.

Comp is 132 to be included in pool. Not 132 in any section. This has been up on the Fairfax Site, why would a school not have the correct information. Not cool!

If a parent thinks their child qualifies for level IV services, why would you even need information from a school based meeting on what you need for an application packet. The Information provided by the schooL district on line is clear and straight forward. Samples of work, school based academic awards. The only thing that changes year to year is the qualifying pool score. This year is 132 comp in either NNAT or CoGaT, not a 132 in any section to be automatically in the pool. If you feel your child would excel in this program apply... worst that will happen is they stay in their neighborhood school. If You feel stressed your child did not get the 132 relax... Many children excel when they gain then confidence of being the top of their class by staying at the local school. Fueling their love of learning and work ethic. Not getting burnt out and stressed out setting next to a child whom self taught multiplication in k- grade.
