| Now read the MCPS parents complaints about being open and how superior FCPS is... |
George Washington Parkway, both north and south. It was on the news this morning. Three accidents, both directions, one right under the 123 onramp to McLean. Another at Spout RUn. |
We just passed a HUGE bond for new school construction. Bureaucrats never have enough of our tax money. And really, it's pathetic to say schools are closed because we need more bathrooms and "real" classrooms on cold days... I hope we are not paying the staff or the hours not worked. I can get my kids to school whatever hours they are open. But it's only 180 days a year to begin with (counting half days of course) |

How can the frequent school closings due to the threat of snow, a quarter of an inch of snow or temperatures above 0 but below 30 degrees not reflect on the quality of education our children are receiving in this area? Teaching our children a work ethic should not include the excuse not to work when the temperature is not perfectly climate.
Yes, there are "what if's" put out there such as what if a bus breaks down, what if there is an accident on the way to school and so on. Those risks are present everyday everywhere. They are not exclusive to the DC area. And, more often than not, they are not rationale fears. This obviously does not apply in truly inclement weather. Whethere there is a correlation, I do not know, but it seems that the school system reflects this country's attitude towards women's careers in general. They are not as important as men's careers and a "good mother" doesn't use school as, "babysitting". The truth is when school is delayed and closed; more often than not it is the mother who stays home. Thus keeping mothers at home with their children and not in the workforce as, unfortunately, many people in this world think they should be. |
Maybe the issue is the division of labor in your family. If both spouses work, there is no reason why it should always be the mom. Also, your child's work ethic shouldn't be impacted by snow days. I remember that one of the fun parts of being a kid was hoping for weather closings and my work ethic is fine. I make sure that I encourage good work ethic in my kids by giving some "school work" for part of the day off and then free time with friends for the other part. I explain that it was supposed to be a school day so they need to do something academic to compensate for the fact that they are missing school. They get the academic stuff done and then they create their own memories of how fun weather days off in childhood can be. |

It is all incentives.
Reduce compensation for days or hours lost and we would have much lower school delays and closings. |

Yes, I agree with you PP, snow days were fun when I was a child because they happened a few days a year not as frequently as they do in the DC area. Plus, back then, we actually had snow on the ground on a snow day.
As for work ethic, closing schools when the weather is chilly or there is an inch or less of snow on the ground teaches one that unless conditions are ideal, one does not have to go to work/school. I do not think that the mother staying home is unique to my home. I am certain that in the vast majority of households, if a parent stays home or arranges childcare because school is closed, it is the mother who undertakes that responsibility. That is just the way it is in this country. |
Yes! Let's pit children's safety against teacher compensation. Brilliant!

| How often does the district use more than 3 emergency/weather days? I dont think FCPS has had to make up many days the past few years. I don't think it is as frequent as some of you make it out to be. |
My MCPS high schoolers had no national exam on Tuesday; they do have regular exams next week though. Apparently some MCPS parents were upset that schools were open, but I was not. |
Huh, first Pp? You realize teachers dont make these decisions, or principals for that matter? How is this solution anything other than a display of your contempt for educators? |
