I thought the same (watching the clip of her talking about the white house). Definitely affected but with some southern thrown in. |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locust_Valley_lockjaw. This is fascinating, although I always thought that James Bottomtooth III in Family Guy was demonstrating the famous Habsburg Jaw of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that popped up in descendant royals including Marie Antoinette and Prince Philip II of Spain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prognathism#Mandibular_prognathism_.28progenism.29 |
Interesting. Thanks! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locust_Valley_lockjaw |
It reads as southern to me, but I think that's the lack of the final "R" sounds and also some of the diphthongs on the vowels which give it a bit of a drawl. Not like Katherine Hepburn, who has no "R" but has short vowels. (Hepburn also has the very characteristic creaky voice, aka "vocal fry".) |
OMG im spending too much time on the site. I knew this was a zombie thread. |
She sounded like Marilyn Mo,roe. |
she faked it. her sister in laws used to laugh at her |
I think it makes her sound a bit slow or high on drugs. I don't find it appealing or cultured at all. |
I don't think it was all fake, but the "breathiness" does sound a bit affected. Still, she was a lovely and strong woman. |
I hear some Virginian long vowels in there LOL |
Are you 104 years old? Because otherwise your experience is moot. |
How did this old thread get revived? I think the lockjaw theory pretty much sums it up. |
Pretentious. |
Um, source? JFK ok, he had Addison's disease and was a partier, but Jackie? |
Yes. She went to boarding school and they taught the Mid-Atlantic accent. It's halfway between British and American accents, and was completely made up to sound educated and elite. http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2013/08/the-rise-and-fall-of-katharine-hepburns-fake-accent/278505/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Atlantic_accent |
