What a bizarre interpretation of the phrase... if you just made that up, I like it.

I didn't make it up.

I couldn't recall what she sounded like so I listened to some interviews with her. (I posted the mid-Atlantic comment, based on previous descriptions in this thread, but now I'd say she sounded like a cross between Marilyn Monroe and a woman with a slight Georgia accent.)

Stepford accent.

It is also sometimes called a trans-Atlantic accent. I don't think it was made up--it's just how posh old money upper class people used to speak through elocution lessons and so on. There is a similar accent for a lot of hollywood actors of the time (Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn, Carey Grant), and a lot of old school politicians (Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt). It's the East Coast prep school kind of accent. I don't think it was an affectation, just a reflection of her time and social class.

And this is interesting too! I love how the Crane brothers speak....

"A contemporary comedic example of a Mid-Atlantic accent appears in the television sitcom Frasier used by the Crane brothers played by Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce, as well as the aristocratic accent spoken by Pete Campbell in the drama series Mad Men. Mark Hamill's vocal portrayal of Batman villain the Joker speaks with a highly theatrical Mid-Atlantic accent throughout his many animation and video game appearances."

Yes, the Crane brothers! Love them too.

Years ago I read an article or biography that stated her breathy "little girl voice" was an affectation and her real speaking voice was much different. I'm sure anything we could find in a documentary or on YouTube would have the affectation.

The distinctive Kennedy accent is theirs alone. The pure Boston accent is much different, as is the upperclass Brahmin. As a wealthy daughter of a high-profile politician, Rose would have been taught elocution to mask anything that would make her sound "common."

Katharine Hepburn's is also atypical of what we would hear in Connecticut.

lol. True. But back in the day the MRS degree was the most financially stable option for most women.

I am not the old money poster, but Jackie's accent is that of Miss Porter's School in Manhattan. I know women who went to that school, and they all have that breathless, unidentifiable European accent way of speaking. They are 40 years younger than Jackie, but still sound the same.

It's stupid and obnoxious. Speak like that when you don't have to eat, sleep or shit like all other humans.

Miss Porter's is in Farmington, CT. Before that she went to Chapin which is in Manhattan. I know many many people who went there and none of them speak like that.

She was. She and JFK used dangerous amounts of drugs.

+1

PP is clueless, not only about the location of Miss Porter's, but about this topic generally.

Pp maybe wrong about Miss Porter's but the accent sounds a lot like the women I know who went to Spence, Chapin, Nightengale, Brearley, etc. Think Gwenyth Paltrow who sounds similar. Definitely an affect. They don't all sound like that. Only the affected ones. Guess it's better than a Neu Yolk accent. LOL!
