Holton on TV

You know, don't we all send our kids to private school and pay the tuition because we want them to be around positive peers who want to work hard and love their school? Each of us picked a school we are hopefully happy with and wanted to stay away from public schools that label smart achieving kids, nerds. Yet here is a mom or a bunch of moms that have their panties in a bunch because there are some people posting positive comments about a school. Really? You seem like the bullies and Debbie downers we want to keep away from our kids in the first place.

This is an anonymous forum with a million different types of posts. Seriously, it means nothing. Seems like a total waste to bash something like this.

I can see your 'total waste to bash something like this' comment, but I really hate when people throw around the term "bullying" so casually -- it starts to rob that word and term of its real meaning. This is an anonymous board, and people are ripping or satirizing or criticizing the original post -- none of that is "bullying."

I'm a Holton parent and an occasional booster. Tbh, I was surprised by the tone of the article, regardless of who wrote the piece. It seemed out of step with the school.

And to an earlier poster, I've often thought about posting on Gansler. There is so much that should be told but I'm sure it would be reported and removed, however accurate.

It seems to me that bashing is acceptable on DCUM, but if people have great things to say that's a problem. I am willing to bet if these "Boosters" were "Bashers" there would a lot less criticism on this board. C’mon folks, just be happy that parents are happy with their child's school and even if you think it is overkill just try to celebrate with these parents. There is no real competition among all of the wonderful private schools in this area; all of these kids seem to be high achievers, with great college placements, that come from involved, smart families. Can't we all just get along!

At the September 21 taping of “It’s Academic”, Captain [ ]'14, and her teammates [ ] '14 and [ ] '15 sailed to a spellbinding win over Osborne Park and Park View High Schools. Their score at game’s end was 805 which set a new record for the Holton team and falls just 10 points shy of the all-time "It’s Academic" record. Osborne Park and Park View struggled to stay afloat with totals of 360 and 340 respectively.

Save the one occasion on which Osborne Park hit the buzzer in the final round, Holton did not miss a beat – or a question. To watch as they figured out the question before host Hilary Howard could finish reading it and provided one correct answer after another was truly a sight to behold. The team’s lightning fast reflexes elicited an audible laugh of incredulity from the studio audience at one point in the game as a picture of a Monarch butterfly flashed on the screen, Howard barely had uttered the words “moth and butterfly” before Holton buzzed in and Moffett confidently responded, “Lepidoptera.”

Congrats to these talented and intelligent young women who have dedicated so much of their time and energy to “It’s Academic”. Be sure to watch the show when it airs at 11 a.m. on October 19 on NBC4.

Good Lord. Did someone from Holton truly write that piece? What a bunch of biotches.

I don't care what Holton girls tell themselves in their own school newspaper. I do wonder why the heck stuff like this gets posted, with a flimsy cover of "how's the writing?", on DCUM.

Good lord, if every private school in the area starts posting blurbs about their teams' triumphs and victories over lesser schools, this forum would become completely useless. "Well Burke won a debate? I'll raise you a football victory for Field! Take that!!!!" No, please, make it stop.

Interesting. I read this as a poster putting it up as a critique because the article read (to me at least) as crowing rather excessively over the outing. (The word "spellbinding" made me laugh, I'll admit.)

I do wish the person who posted this had redacted the names of the kids, though.

It's on the school's website under 'news' using the names of the students. Holton shared the article it via social media. The kids were on TV.

I know. I'm not saying it was immoral not to redact the names. But given that this is a critical thread -- not of the kids themselves, of course, but of the posting of the original It's Academic "news" -- I still wish the kid names were redacted.

Understood. And the kids WERE amazing. Despite the awkward write-ups and booster bashing--what those young women did was really great--kudos to them!

She doesn't say anyone here is a bully. It is an anology of the bullies we want to keep our kids away from. It is a good point.

Wait, WTF? Public schools are intolerable for smart achieving kids? PP, if you want to see a "bully" and a "Debbie Downer" all you really need to do is look in the mirror.

I swear I need a break from DCUM. Too many posters like the first PP. I need to go talk to some adults.

This seems like an innocent post gone wrong. The original poster is not a Holton mom. I also think the person who posted that school write up was doing it to bash the school not brag. The fact that they took tht time to go to the website to find it is a little nutty. It's a great school as are many in this area. Save yourselves the heart burn and don't read posts that have nothing to do with your school if you come here for information not entertainment. This is a highly entertaining site (real housewives type of drama) but not very informative.

It hit a raw nerve, apparently. OP might not have understood the history behind much of this.

PP makes a very good point. This forum is way too full of people making silly claims, like how smart kids don't belong in public schools, but that's just a start on the BS you see around here. This forum is also too full of posters making ad hominem attacks, like calling each other 8, instead of making rational arguments.
