Do you not believe the research, then? |
I believe all this "research" and "studies"money would be better spent elsewhere. |
Longer school days do not increase test scores. These kids barely get enough time to eat and recess is a rush. They need time for sports, playing outside AND to do all the homework.
If they leave school at 4pm and get home at 4:30, then rush off to some sport, they are home at 6:30, shovel dinner inside and then cry as they do homework when they are too tired!! Elementary school kids do not need a longer school day. They need less of this 2.0 garbage. |
High school needs to start later and I don't see any problem with elemntary being longer but I hope the extra half hour is used wisely. |
They are welcome to increase the length of the day for elementary kids if they use that time for a second recess. Think about it, it would be cheaper to negotiate for more recess aides than with the teachers unions for more time in the classroom. |
That is not responsive to the question. |
What about farmers' kids? up at the asscrack of dawn and working! |
Since MoCo kids have a shorter school day than most every other district, are they the only kids who can't handle, or don't need, the extra 30 minutes? |
Do you personally know a lot of these kids? Are they also attending rigorous high schools and doing 2-3 hours of homework every evening while trying to balance a heavy load of extracurricular activities? How do you know farmers' kids aren't dead-tired too? |
People defending these teens and there need for that extra one hour really think it will work?
They get done an house later, sports start an hour later, they get home at night to start homework an hour later. Guess what???? They will go to bed an hour later. Stop wasting everyone's time. Stop being a helicopter parent. High school starts early. You knew this years ago before your child entered the school. STOP COMPLAINING!! You are teaching your kids to be whiny just like you. How about teaching them to suck it up just like they have to do sometimes because that is life. |
Not the farmer poster, but my Amish farmer friend used to talk about how silly daylight savings time was. He said it was like cutting one end of a blanket off and sewing it back on to the other end.
In any event, doesn't the research on teen sleeping patterns show they do better going to bed later "and" getting up later? It's not a question of trying to get them to sleep more. It's a matter of circadian rhythms. |
And going to bed an hour later is WHAT THEIR TEENAGE BODY IS DESIGNED TO DO! So, win, win. Read the studies, read the science, and stop talking from anecdotal personal experience. Teens have different biological rhythms. Just a scientific fact. |
THISSSSSS X 1 BILLION |
EINSTEIN the pp is saying the kids will be staying up later...thus really eliminating the xtra hour of so called sleep you think they will get 'cause school starts later. You don't know a lot of teens do you? Yea, trying meeting some real life teens and not research on paper....research goes to bed when you want it to...teens stay the hell up! |
Do you have a teenager, and are you familiar with the research about the effect of sleep on teens' school achievement and mental health? |
