Little Ivies

Some people don't have the resources to visit hundreds of schools. Ratings are a good place to start and schools take the US News rankings most seriously for a reason.

I chuckle at those who think that every school in an urban environment is in a "horrible location" because "gasp" there are people of color nearby. Trying leaving the cocoon for a while, you might learn a thing or two.

No it isn't. Party School no. 1 or 2, just as I said, confirmed by Playboy.

You are dating yourself. There was a time when USC was ranked below UCLA, but those days are gone.

Hardly. I taught there. See for yourself (below result of Google "USC Party". And when you are done with this, then go and google USC vs. UCLA. Competitive ONLY in Football.

I guess having a good social life is BAD thing? At USC the vibrant social life hasn't kept the school from being ranked ahead of UCLA (2012).

But from the perspective of supporters of the California state schools, USC kids get spoiled in so many ways

- Small class sizes. I actually had a class with with like 6 students enrolled. It was pretty funny because if you missed class, the professor would call you out the next day for missing class. I don't think anyone ditched class after that incident for the rest of the semester. UCA is bursting at the seams following budget cuts.

- Faculty that actually CARES. I remember studying at another university abroad. Some of my professors abroad would deliberately IGNORE emails about questions. They also gave us the runaround when our group went in for office hour consultations. The SC faculty spoils us so much. I would talk to my professors at SC just for general life and career advice. And their advice was always centered on what they thought would make me most happy. I am a spoiled Trojan.

- Tailgating ON CAMPUS and then walking across the street to the coliseum to watch football games. Think about this for a second, the Bruins have to make the crawl from their bubble in Westwood across the jam packed 10 onto the 110 and finally up to Pasadena after they spend 30 minutes in the downtown interchange. Trojans are SO spoiled.

- Worldwide alumni network. Don't let others fool you into thinking that USC doesn't have a strong presence in other places of the world. I was 10,000 miles away from LA and I met up with some USC Alums who ended up buying me and a few other students dinner. We still keep in touch til this day. SPOILED AGAIN.

He also has been offered a spot at Vassar which we have pretty much ruled out. He liked Conn College and Williams the most but he is waiting on the coaches. I hope a decision will be firmed up in the next week or two (for all our sakes). I know these are referrred to as "little ivies" however for a kid who will likely come back to the MD/VA area to work, are these looked at as highly in this area as they are in the Northeast (NY, CT,etc...)? Thanks-

Hi OP, PP here..did your son ever make a decision where he is going?

Call me naive, but I am totally blown away that a serious SLAC offers recruited athlete spots without caring about academics.

I'm really surprised. What sport? I'm guessing ice hockey, lacrosse, something preppy like that?

Agree, they defintiely would NOT make such an offer. Its all about academics FIRST and then sports......

Who said the SLAC doesn't care about academics? Of course they care about academics!! Only a select few pass muster and athletes to these schools have to comply with pretty heavy duty requirements. Nephew just went through the process and with a 3.9 GPA and a 2000 SAT let me tell you he still had a fairly tough time but it all ended up working out.
