Little Ivies

Anonymous
Don't know if anyone here is very familiar with Northeast liberal arts colleges. My son is a recruited athelete and has 4 very good opportunties. Three at NESCAC's and 1 one at another school. The three NESCACS are Williams, Conn College and Trinity.

He also has been offered a spot at Vassar which we have pretty much ruled out. He liked Conn College and Williams the most but he is waiting on the coaches. I hope a decision will be firmed up in the next week or two (for all our sakes). I know these are referrred to as "little ivies" however for a kid who will likely come back to the MD/VA area to work, are these looked at as highly in this area as they are in the Northeast (NY, CT,etc...)? Thanks-

I know Vassar is very hippie-like and very intellectual. My old fiances brother went there and fit the bill quite well.

I applied to Conn. College and was waitlisted but got into Brown which is where I went. Its small, preppy, good academics and my mother lived in New Haven at the time so it was good location wise.

Trinity seems to have become a more popular school in recent years.

Williams is another great school, a bit removed. Visited it and just felt it was too out of the way.

Good luck with that decision!

Williams is one of the top SLAC and really in a different league from the other colleges you mention here.

It's August. He is a rising senior and already has been offered spots at these schools for fall 2014?

Yes for his sport the top div3 (NESCAC) the recruiting is basically wrapping up by Sept. I know the first time I hear it I thought it was crazy too.

Take Williams. It's the number 1 liberal arts college in the country. Beautiful setting, smart kids, one on one attention from professors. It's a great school.

Williams is very highly regarded in this area and on the east coast. Of all,the schools you mentioned, that is the top one.

My brother went to Williams, though he said it was a great school (and it is) it was too small and too removed for him personally. He transferred in his sophomore year. There is no denying the cache of the name, but the others you said are also very good schools. I know Conn College and Vassar is top 50 not sure about Trinity.

Just visit and be sure he would be happy there.

what about the SATs? I can't belive (but I'm admittedly ignorant on this) that acceptances go out before Senior year even starts?

Vassar is a bizarre institution. If it were my kid I would say Williams or Conn College, don't know much about Trinity so cannot say.

For top recruits- yes "verbals" are given summer/fall of senior year. It is not however official until Dec.

Ditto on the Vassar comment.

I think you meant cachet, not "cache"...

Definitely Williams assuming he liked the school when he visited. My DC did not like it and did not pursue recruiting there but is still looking at one of the other top NESCAC schools (not ones you listed). I'd rank them as Williams, Vassar, trinity and CC. Big gap between 1/2 and 3/4. Between 2 kids we looked at all those.

To the pp wondering about recruiting-my DS is also a rising sr. He has taken the SATs and has jr year grades. Coaches use this info to assess candidacy. So he's gotten admission assurances from several D3 schools although they all want ED applications.
