Ask for the screening file. You are entitled to it. It will include all the info that the school submitted to gatehouse for the central cmte to review for aap. |
PPs, I know kids who scored very low on both NNAT and CogAT, got high GBRS and are in aap. I know kids with high CogAT, high NNAT and low GBRS who did not get in. I know kids with high NNAT, low CogAT, decent GBRS and are in. I know kids with high CogAT, low NNAT and ok GBRS and they are in. Some kids don't test well, this is why the GBRS holds so much weight. Some kids test awesomely but aren't aap material according to the GBRS. The aap process is like playing poker in Vegas. The odds are against you, unless you know how to play the system or count cards. |
newbie here. So from what i am reading, my average child can get into AAp program and flourish. Why do they even bother having a base school program if everyone can qualify for AAP?
|
Yes, average kids with a high aptitude and motivation for learning can and do flourish in aap. Note, it is no longer GT. High scoring kids with little motivation don't necessarily get into aap. High scoring kids with motivation flourish in aap. Advanced academics is just that...it's advanced and should be open to all that apply and that have decent GBRS. Fwiw, my dc was 99% on NNAT, 99% on CogAT, and 16 on GBRS. Most of DC friends in aap did not score like dc, but are just as great of students. Some struggle, even those with similar scores. I think aap centers should go away and fcps should offer aap to every student that wants the challenge. Why not? |
The name change from GT to Advanced Academics was just that-just a name change. Nothing about the program changed. The intent was to emphasize that the program addresses academic talent, and not the many other types of talents children may have. The name change did not change the purpose of the program, it is still a program for children whose academic needs cannot be met in the regular classroom. |
GBRS is too subjective. I believe a same kid can get very different GBRS from different schools/teachers. Depends on where you live, the outcomes are very different. Standard tests are at least fair game for everyone. Our AART hates high test scores, the higher scores you holding, the lower GBRS she hands out. |
Which aart is that? Do
You think it is because the aart thinks the child may have prepped? |
While the GBRS can certainly be subject to human error or subjectivity, at the same time, it is acknowledged that the tests can be "gamed." FCPS has put into place a system that attempts to balance out issues with both testing and human subjectivity. It is not a perfect system, but who believes a perfect system exists? The point is to identify "children whose academic needs cannot be met in the regular classroom" as best they can. |
