Wish we had a pic of its neighbor "Lamplight Manor" - you know, that huge house at the intersection of CT and Jones Bridge.

YES! Pass it everyday going home. Isnt there a CPA for hire sign in front of the gate all the time. Maybe its the owner..lol!

Where is this one? I think I know the "Lamplight Manor" you are referring to, with the sign out front. I didn't think it was a residential home though. Yikes!

Yes, thanks, 10:02. I love these posts about how McMansions sell well - because that piece of crap on Goldsboro near River has been sitting empty forever. Unless someone finally bought it? What a fugly builder spec eyesore.

This really captures the essence of it.

I agree. Cheap siding. Why even bother with the "brick front"?

Yes! Exactly.

Exactly. I've always thought of McMansions as a bunch of houses in the same neighborhood that all look the same. Often with vinyl siding and no mature trees. Think Loudoun County.

I think that when people build that same type of house in older neighborhoods where it's on top of all the unique houses, it's referred to as an Atrocity.

It's both. There are cookie cutter McMansion developments where whole streets are filled with McMansions on tiny lots all crammed together. They all were built together and owners chose between "The Hampton" "The Cheshire" "The Cheshire II" or "The Winston" and pick and choose between Uba Tuba or Blue Pearl and squared or cylinder columns in the entryway. Lots of these in the ex-burbs and burbs in Florida and the OC.

The other kind of McMansion is the exact home described above, but the builders were hired to construct it in place of a tear down in a more modest or older neighborhood. It still counts as a McMansion in this second scenario even if the home isn't as monstrous as the first scenario. It's McMansion status comes more from the tear down, small lot, dwarf the neighbors aspects.

Ok - I'd agree with that. But a lot of the photos that people are posting are not, to me, the look of a McMansion. The houses are just large. But some of them actually are pretty unique looking.

Yeah, that's pretty pretentious, with its dome-and-portico thing. Who does that architect think he is?? It does have the saving grace of mature trees and a sizable lot, though.

Is a Google Maps photo ok? I can't take a picture of this one since it's right off of Rt 50, but it's pretty amazing. It's like 5000 sq ft on a 7000 sq ft lot. If you drive on Rt 50 past seven corners, you've probably seen it!

I don't get the objection to brick houses that are not four sides brick. I don't have a brick house so maybe I am missing something but why does it matter if the side of your house that is hard to see anyway isn't done in brick? Isn't it a waste of resources to do this?

Well I guess those balconies on the front come in handy to stare at the view of traffic on Rt 50, lol!
