Exactly.  I've always thought of McMansions as a bunch of houses in the same neighborhood that all look the same.  Often with vinyl siding and no mature trees.  Think Loudoun County.

It's both. There are cookie cutter McMansion developments where whole streets are filled with McMansions on tiny lots all crammed together. They all were built together and owners chose between "The Hampton" "The Cheshire" "The Cheshire II" or "The Winston" and pick and choose between Uba Tuba or Blue Pearl and squared or cylinder columns in the entryway. Lots of these in the ex-burbs and burbs in Florida and the OC.

The other kind of McMansion is the exact home described above, but the builders were hired to construct it in place of a tear down in a more modest or older neighborhood. It still counts as a McMansion in this second scenario even if the home isn't as monstrous as the first scenario. It's McMansion status comes more from the tear down, small lot, dwarf the neighbors aspects. [/quote]
