I'm not really clear what kind of advice you're seeking. Are you asking whether you should do something about the teacher? Whether you should switch schools? What other schools you should consider?

+1. If you don't want to hear from parents who struggled with the same decision and ultimately chose public schools, then what do you want to hear? If you want reassurance on Pyle, the public school thread would be a better place for that.

We are struggling with this now also, with the DS in private. One thing to consider is that the “top” publics are far from free. In Maryland, Whitman and Churchill are the top. Reasonable homes in those areas 750-800K for a small, older or micro-sized home. +300K, the cost of 4 years private for 2 = 1.2, which is an ordinary suburban home in these districts.
The top publics do compare favorably to the mid level privates. The top privates completely outrank the top publics, if your DCs are of an academic type. The top publics send many students to the state schools; the top privates send their students to the Ivies and the top ten (or 25).
The price is a huge factor. 300K goes a long way towards a college degree. Also if you want to get an advanced degree, that will be another 300K. Without a rising real estate/stock market, I think there may be a number of parents who want to bank that private school money. Just in case.
If your HHI is above 500K, then why not send them to private?

With no disrespect intended, the top kids at Whitman/Churchill get into exactly the same types of schools as the top privates in this area, I assure you. This is said as someone who has the greatest respect for the education offered at the independent schools -- small class sizes, more writing, less focus on teaching to the test, etc. But the top kids at the top MoCo high schools have an equally impressive array of college choices as your top Sidwell/STA/NCS/GDS/Holton/Maret kids.

Public school students fare better in college admissions than private students in DC area. Just a fact, because the DC area is so saturated with good students from every school.

OP, bottom line: Private school teachers stink. They have no certification and the jobs are easier to get than in public school, pay stinks, so they don't get the cream of the crop.
Public school environment stinks, no specials large classes.

If you are looking for a great school where the head and assistant head of DOCTORATES in education and the tuition is HALF what you pay(ed), take a look at Christ Episcopal School in Rockville. They have been doing amazing things for their students including a ground breaking curriculum delivery system called LIFT they created with Johns Hopkins University. I mean, Johns Hopkins working with a school and the tuition is just 16K? Give me a break.

They don't have the beautiful fields and state-of-the-art observatory that wow a lot of parents and convince them that the tuition is worth it...what they do have is skilled, master teachers from Preschool - grade 8 and ALL of the students matriculate to top high schools like Georgetown Prep, Visitation, Maret, NCS, St. Albans just to name a few...I name these because these seem to be the schools everyone is stuck on.

The only problem with CES is that it is BORING and the kids are not happy. One family ran from there to public and the children finally feel free from an overly restricted environment. They now threaten the kids with "going back to private" if they don't behave. The word Episcopal is deceiving, it can feel like a 1950s Catholic school.
