But the alums are awesome people and know how to spell Carleton.

That's OK; some of us like "weird" people -- AKA, cool, interesting and not bland wanna-be's. But, thanks for the head's up.

You say "weird" and I say "creative." It's why Oberlin appealed to me. It's a great place for brilliant and creative people.

Hah! Excellent point. I was just going to do the same (husband went to Carleton).

Wittenberg is a great school, even though it's not terribly selective. It's much like Wooster.

It's 2013. Weird is the midwest.

I'm under the impression that a fair number of former drugged out whack jobs have found their way onto this forum.

Carleton College is by far the most prestigious SLAC in the Midwest.

I have a very "prestigious" background (prep school/Ivy grad) and I've only ever heard of one of those schools. Not that I really care what school your child goes to, but putting a Carleton sticker on your car would get a polite "oh, so where is that?" reaction out of me. Many people who care about the label on the degree are only going to focus on HYP anyway.

Focus on the school that best suits your child - which one has the program that works for your child's interests and future plans. Don't fixate on "prestigious".

Yes, but I'm guessing you're from the east coast, right? There is much better name recognition for all of these in the midwest, where I'm sure many are unfamiliar with the smaller eastern SLACs.

I spent my first 22 years within a 5 hour drive of Carleton and never heard of it.

I grew up in Indiana and am familiar with all of them. Have friends that went to Oberlin, Kenyon and Macalester.

Yup. This.

Which is not really that surprising since it has more of a national reputation than a local/regional reputation. You would have heard of it if you grew up in this area.
