What kind of weird body shapes do you have that the seats are crushing your faces and touching your laps when they are reclined?

I'm 6'5". In regular coach seating, even when the seat in front of me is fully upright, my knees are pressed against the seatback. Try as I might, my thighbones simply won't get any shorter. Every inch you recline pushes my knees another inch into your seatback. You should be thankful you're so petite.

If you're nice to me, I'll help you get your bag down from the overhead.

You need to buy Economy plus or above - end of problems.

Why do tall people insist on always mentioning how uncomfortable they are in economy seats? Do something about it and stop bitching.

Trust me, I work very hard to get seats with extra room. If you're willing to pay for a first-class seat for me, I'll be very grateful.

And don't you worry, I'm not just sitting around bitching about how uncomfortable I am. If I'm stuck in a tiny coach seat, and someone is making my life more miserable by cranking his seat back into my knees, I'm doing something about it. Sometimes that can be simply a polite request for more room. Other times, however, when that other person takes the attitude of "I'll recline and you will deal," things get a little less polite.

No matter whether we di it the easy way, or the hard way, it almost always works itself out in the end.

i actually think the recline/not recline thing is an interesting social commentary. (i'm also the 'you know it's inconsiderate' poster). people who say 'they're MADE to recline! that's the whole POINT!' - an argument which makes no sense, by the way - are likely entitled and inconsiderate in life. reclining seat as a microcosm, and all that.

again, just because something HAS the capability, doesn't mean that capability should be used if it unnecessarily inconveniences someone else. but if one thinks that they have the right - ME ME MEEEE! - then there's no convincing, i suppose.

Be warned though: We long-legged travelers have been dealing with this for years, and we are not defenseless. When I am sitting behind someone who looks like a recliner, I often use my arms and knees to physically hold the seat upright, preventing him from reclining. And if you drop your seat back into my lap, I will direct my air vent at your head, and drape my newspaper over the top of the seat, so it flaps against your head. I also will start using my knees to kick at the back of your seat. I've even been known to blow a stinky burp over the top of the seat. If you rudely invade my space, I will make your flight equally uncomfortable.

Want to avoid all this conflict? Just turn around and ask nicely before you recline your seat. I may ask that you do it gently and leave me a little space, but I'll never say no.

I hope this helps you.

I think I was on a flight with you once. You were so rude and obnoxious to a flying companion who had the temerity to recline his seat, that the flight attendants asked the airline to upgrade our entire party to first class on the next leg of our flight, by way of apology. Worked out great for us. Thanks!

The best would be if you brought your toddler along and installed his carseat rear-facing in the airplane seat. Then the person in front of them couldn't recline at all, most likely.

There I was minding my own business, person in front of me reclines so I reclined. The woman behind me FREAKED out. She got up and was screaming at me that she has a 42" inseam. She kept hitting my chair back. I was shocked. I didn't even recline that far, just a bit back so I had more room. The flight attendant came over and she started screaming at him about how she had no room (he was very polite) and that she was going to beat the crap out of him, pushing him on the shoulders, etc.. Out of no where a guy came up. Took her down and dragged her to the back of the plane. We landed in Chicago and she was taken off by the cops.

I have no idea what happened after that. It was totally crazy. I fully reclined for the rest of the flight.

Excellent. Please, no crazies on board.

Isn't it self evident you shouldn't be there? When you rent a car do you also choose the smallest model where you don't fit, and then expect everyone else in the road to drive slowly to accommodate your difficult driving?

So what, now tall people shouldn't fly coach?

It is kind of like if you were short and going to movies/shows/concerts. Rows of tall people in front of you obstructing your view. Do you think everyone should crouch way down in their seats in order to be considerate of your lack of height. That they should make themselves uncomfortable and put themselves out so that you are as comfortable as possible. Would you call them rude and get mad that they didn't slouch way down.

Different things are awkward for tall, short, thin, fat..it is the reality of life. you can't expect everyone else's world to revolve around what makes you the most comfortable.

Yes, because all tall people have an endless supply of money to purchase premium airplane seats. I'm not even tall and this attitude annoys me.

I am PP and the tall poor people need to sort out options, like getting seating in bulkhead seats.

And in regards to everyone else who thinks its "rude" to recline, if you want to be martyrs and sit straight up and be uncomfortable for 7 hrs to Europe, be my guest.

The best revenge is living well.....
Tall, thin people may have problems on planes, but nowhere else.
A few hours of discomfort are worth a lifetime of better options.

I think there is a differnce between those who recline their seats the second that the plane is in the air and keep it that way for the entire flight and those who recline tehir seats when they might want to take a nap. I hate the first group but I have no problem with the second group.

Don't be silly. Tall people can fly coach - as long as they are aware they will be uncomfortable and don't try and tell others that they can't recline their seats.

It's your choice. Live up to it. You only have yourself, and perhaps the airlines, to blame. Not the person in front of you.

Everyone on this thread should go have a drink. Happy Friday! My best recliner story is the marine who ended up in my lap on the DCA to DFW flight back in 2009.
Cheers to recliners!
