Moving (suddenly!) to DC/Columbia Heights, what great (or good) PK3 can we get into mid July?

Thanks, I did see that it's not nearby. I met a teacher who taught in Anacostia, she had some heart-breaking stories.

I will check out Imagine Hope, thank you very much everyone.

Thanks SO MUCH you guys! 6 pages of conversation later and... WE HAVE A SLOT AT A SCHOOL!!! To all of you who suggested we check out Imagine Hope, we did, and so now at least we know our dd can go somewhere. So grateful for the advice!

And even though I know very little about the school (and was concerned about some of the comments/reviews on GreatSchools), the admissions person we talked to was very cool and sounded knowledgable.

I will of course have my phone close by for the next 2 months in case we get a spot anywhere else, but with the tiny bit I know so far about this school I feel good. It seems like there's no direct public transportation route which is a bummer, but that may be exactly why they still have spots (well, that and maybe the harsh reviews!). But we'll deal with that.

I'm still checking back in case anyone else has other words of wisdom, but wanted you all to know how deeply I appreciate all the advice in case this is the end of the thread.

THANK YOU! Hope to meet some of you in person somewhere along the line as we start this phase of "DC Urban Parenting".

Tip for your PK 4 year.

All charters have a lottery, and the good ones have a waitlist. Some of the desirable charters order the waitlist number based on the date/time you applied. IOW, if you're the first person to fill out the application, you're going to be first on the WL (which pretty much guarantees you'll get in). I know of these two, but there might be others. Oh, and open house/application season begins in the Fall. As you've learned the hard way, if you wait until Spring, you've got only the dregs to choose from.

Stokes (French & Spanish Immersion)
Yu Ying (Mandarin Immersion)

Be sure to check them out, particularly the application deadlines (which sometimes occur before the first open house).

I would try Appletree on Girard Street. I got my daughter in last year in late august

By the way, Little Flower Montessori is in Columbia Heights and many of my friends have sent their kids there and are happy. Also, do apply separately to DC bilingual and Centronia. Centronia's wait list really MOVES, so even if you don't get in before the start of school, you might be able to get in mid-year, and so if your first choice doesn't work out.... My kids were very happy there!
