S/O Doctors: post your salary and practice area

Since when are dentists considered doctors?

My gastroenterologist husband makes $350k a year.

My husband is a foreign born and trained physician. He spent six years working odd jobs like security guard and lab tech trying to get a US residency. Then several years of residency followed by two fellowships. Derailed my career thanks to all the moving and solo parenting. Starting salary $180k, probably will be up to $200k soon. Not really worth the effort. Won't tell you the specialty because it's a small one.

Was a fool to marry my doctor without checking out his finances. After marriage found out he had six figure debt. Wiped out my savings paying it down. His friend was asked by his accountant friend how he slept at night with all that debt. We squeaked by for many years living in an tiny apartment and I put him on a strict budget.

While my friend who married the hedge fund partner has two houses a 24/7 nanny and goes to galas.

I met my DH when he was in med school. It was a long journey but he now earns $1m+ as a specialized surgeon. I was the breadwinner for over a decade. It took a while to pay off our student loans but we are now saving and investing. By the time we are 40, we hope to have a few million saved.

I'm now 35 and there is no way we're going to have a few million saved by 40. We're still paying down the remainder student loan debt.I actually don't appreciate you bragging about your "specialized surgeon" because it perpetuates the fantasy doctors are "rich" when most of them aren't and has tons of debt, and goodness knows we get enough vitriol about it. I had a plumber come into our one bedroom apartment and you could see he could not fanthom why we were living there, and he tried to ask us diplomatically what the hell we were doing. So please stuff it, and do your DH a favor and not perpetuate the "rich doctor" stereotype.

There is no way this story is real. I can't imagine that one could get the expertise to command this salary in your early to mid thirties (as just finishing a residency will take you to your early thirties), and there aren't many medical specialties that pay this much (maybe high end plastic surgery or a high volume CT surgeon) and again, even for the ones that do, you're not getting that salary fresh out of training, which would have to happen for you to have "a few million" saved by age 40. This is 100 percent fabrication.

In the U.S., a newly graduated dentist is then awarded the DDS, Doctor of Dental Surgery, degree or the DMD, Doctor of Dental Medicine, degree depending on the dental school attended. The degrees are equivalent.

All the people I know who became dentists are the ones who couldn't get into med school, sorry. The money may be good, but it far easier to be a dentist than a physician.

I would have expected more. You picked the wrong profession.

But isn't the OP really making about $360k/year since s/he is only working every other week?

This is a standard hospitalist schedule. They usually end up working 80+ hours for 7 days straight during that week, so every other week is full time.

DH is an orthopedic spine surgeon. Most of his colleagues in various areas break $1 million. They are one of the highest paid sub specialties though.

Dr's aren't responding because they are working. My DH is at the hospital tonight and is the specialist on call. I won't say which specialty because it's a small world.

Generally speaking doctors as a whole are not much into bragging about money on a petty woman's website.

They already know how much specialists earn.

Ped and family medicine earn the least.
Anesthesia and ER docs earn 200-400.
Neurosurgeons earn the most.

Wow - My friend is a pediatrician; I'm a school teacher. We both work PT (60%) and make the same amount of money. the thing is? I have summers off; she doesn't.

Yeah - They make TONS of money, and their jobs are easy, especially when they're on call.

You're an idiot.

Pediatrician is the lowest paid Doctor pretty much. It's s choice people make.
Teachers here get paid a fortune because the Montgomery County Council is fond of raping the taxpayers.

a fortune? omfg

You really ARE an idiot. a fucking idiot

Hope you realize those are not MDs. Medical school grads become ophthalmologists.
