Pit Bulls and the HOA

The misinformation about pitties is astounding. I don't own one and wouldn't because of the liability and the image. I breed, raise, and train GSDs.

First, one of the reasons pit bull terriers get such a bad reputation is because they are often blamed in bites by other breeds. Take this test and be honest.

Second, unfortunately they are the dogs of choice for people that should probably never own a dog. These are the kinds of people who neglect and abuse their pets creating dangerous dogs.

Third, bad breeding has led to aggressive behavior. Purposely breeding for aggression creates dangerous dogs. It could happen in any breed.

Finally, many other breeds are more dangerous yet receive little attention. German Shepherds bite more often than pit bull terriers and most people love them.

Truth
Any dog can become aggressive. Pitties are no different.
Pit bull terriers, like any large breed, cause a lot of damage when they bite.

There is nothing special about their jaws. They don't even have a particularly strong bite compared to other dogs their size.
The breed actually does really well on temperament tests.

Just as an aside - I am a Hospice Minister. One of our therapy dogs is a pit bull terrier.

Well, most people drive cars to get to places they need to go. They could take alternative modes of transportation that are more inconvenient. Nobody needs to have a pit bull when they could have lots of other breeds with better statistics. Having another breed of dog is no inconvenience at all.

I posted I. Another thread about this, but people should really read up on these dogs. They were bred to NOT be aggressive to humans. Further, Americans lived with Pits for a century, happily. Not until the media grabbed the story of dog fighting did the perception change.

Seriously. People need to be informed. I don't necessarily care about this issue, but I Hate how people spout off BS on topics without actually knowing anything about topic at hand. Drives me batty when repeat misinformation. It's like they're so proud of being uninformed. ,

Pits used to be family dogs, true. The dog in The Little Rascals was a pit. However, they were bred to be aggressive, and several of the champion stud dogs were known to be aggressive towards people. It is false to say that responsible breeders culled dogs that were aggressive towards people. They didn't, they bred them.

So we just euthanize any dog with pit bull in them? That would kill millions of dogs overnight. I guess you've never been to a shelter as most of the dogs needing homes have some type of bull terrier in them. Testing and eliminating all of those dogs sure sounds expensive to me.

OP, if I lived in a community where there was a Pitt bull ban and you invited someone with a pitt bull anyway, I would call the police and report you to the HOA. And if something happened, I would sue both you and your friend.

I'd bet that most of the pit bulls that attack were purchased from an irresponsible "breeder" between the prices of $50-$300. Or they were dogs that didn't have the visual appearance of any other particular breed so they were therefore labeled as a pit bull
