@13:57, the "whorehouse" poster is fucking nuts.
@13:58, sorry if the existence of people who disagree with the RCC annoys you. Several people suggested OP join the RCC, several others (including myself) said why this was not an option *for them.* There's been some degree of wudeness by the more conservative/traditionalist posters in this thread, but I suppose if you agree with something, extremists that agree with you don't seem as bad. |
So do you feel better and more Christian now? |
I'm the OP and and I am certainly not anti-Catholic. I just could never be one because I feel about the right to choose an abortion--and I do feel that the RCC oppresses women. |
14:07 How does suggesting that a whiner who hates the Catholic Church take their religious worship elsewhere mean that they are ant-Christian? Are you the poster that stirs the pot and then makes the snotty "are your feeling Christian" comment again and again and again. Fortunately, this is American and we are still free to worship as we please. I do not agree with the positions taken in many other houses of worship, but I do not make it a point to lambaste and or denigrate their beliefs...and yes that make me feel Christian. |
Here is an idea. Go to the Church that best fits your beliefs and needs and myob regarding other churches. |
I'm 13:35, and I thank you for your post at 13:58. I'm another protestant, and you spoke pretty well for me. Of course people who disagree with the RCC can post their thoughts on DCUM. My point was more against a certain type of poster. The poster who, when s/he sees the word "catholic," reflexively launches into an anti-catholic rant about irrelevant things like this one catholic roommate s/he happened to bunk with years ago, complete with unverified information about altar girls. The type of poster who uses the RCC's position on gays as a cover for including in all sorts of irrelevant stuff that happened several hundred years ago concerning the RCC, whorehouses, and simony. I was the poster who asked "how did we get from a discussion about an episcopalian church in NW DC into another anti-catholic free-for-all?" Correct me if I'm misrepresenting you, but I think this may be in line with your criticism of people who seem to do a search on the word "catholic" and then launch into a diatribe on unrelated issues. For example, when you wrote: "So if you are not educating, then you are just inserting yourself into a conversation with irrelevant and uninteresting information for the purposes of picking a fight on an issue you feel irrationally attached to." |
I doubt that poster is even Christian - I think she means this to mock all Christians. I agree, the Christian position is to figure out your beliefs, but avoid denigrating others' beliefs. |
@14:30
I'm new to the anti-Catholic ranting game, although I did call the whorehouse poster fucking nuts. The Catholic roommate I had in college is irrelevant (although when he said "I don't know how you can be a Democrat and a Christian", I was somewhat insulted.) For that I apologize. The other issues are legitimate, and I think deserve a better response than "poor baby." (I was also 100% incorrect about altar girls being forbidden in the Diocese of Arlington.) |
If you disagree than go to another church. Personally I don't believe in bits and pieces are ok, you have to take it as a whole. |
Thanks for the explanations. You can learn from your less self-aware peers. 1. We agree, totally unrelated rants (e.g. whorehouses) just make you (generically) look insane. 2. Trying to turn every thread into an anti-catholic bullying session makes you (generically) look unbalanced. 3. If you can just let go -- like when you see a poster say something nice about the RCC and you manage to hold back re what you hate about the RCC until you see whether the conversation actually takes off -- then it's probably better for your own health and sanity. Not to mention preventing derailment of a thread that was, after all, about a particular episcopalian church. Best! One of the protestants here |
I'm a cafeteria catholic who attends church a few times a year. still like it. |
pelosi and obama consider themselves christian yet they advocate aborting the planet |
14:50 coming back to address your points! Best to divide a long post up, I think. Also, I didn't write "poor baby."
I agree with your objections to RCC doctrine, particularly wrt gays and abortion. Like you, I'm also totally, absolutely, against any religion that separates into "us" vs. "them," whether it's through communion, or some other rite or way of creating an exclusive membership. The catholic church is not alone in doing this, in fact some other major world religions are equally guilty. I'm one of those who agrees that it's best to take the whole, not just pieces. That's why I belong to a different church. FWIW, I also think it's important to respect others' beliefs, even if I disagree with them. And that's why I've been defending catholics here, against what sometimes seems like a whole tribe of mean girls with uniformed, knee-jerk reactions. Please note the difference, though: respecting is not the same as refraining from criticizing. Unfortunately, most of the so-called debate on DCUM is ugly, knee-jerk, mean-girl stuff, not respectful at all. |
Jesus still loves the fake christians |
I dunno, the oil wells the GOP advocates putting everywhere are sucking up the guts of the earth. That's kind of like abortion isn't it? |
