BMW v. Mercedes Benz

Buffett drives a Cadillac DTS. Before that it was a Lincoln Town Car.

Bill Gates has a few porsches for fun. His daily car is what he calls a "normal Mercedes". But when he drives his family around, he does it in a minivan. Yep, Bill at the wheel of a minivan.

Steve Ballmer drives a 1998 Lincoln Continental.

I think Jobs is driving a Prius.

Sam Walton drove a pickup truck. I think it was a Ford.

Obviously not. Only on this cheapo website would people be advocating driving Toyotas and Hyundais over BMWs. It's hilarious. Newsflash: wealthy people typically drive nice cars (take a drive through any nice suburban neighborhood in Maryland or Virginia), and don't really care that crunchy Subaru drivers think that money could be better spent elsewhere.

Crunchy (not really) Subaru driver here. You can buy you BMW or Mercedes, I don't mind.

What a riot. Our HHI is $450,000, no mortgage or debt of any kind. $3 million + net worth. I drive a ..... Honda. I could easily pay cash for a 7 series, but I choose not to. I'm not into cars. Is that okay with you?

Can someone just tell me why someone with no money buys new cars every couple of years? Puzzling.

historically, because of racism, religious prejudices and classism, certain groups were kept out of the housing markets or out of certain neighborhoods. so instead of competing based on nice houses, or just putting their money into housing, these groups developed a cultural affinity into getting their status from the kind of car they drove. it has perpetuated to this day.

Even if true, that doesn't explain all the white guys are driving around in cars that they couldn't afford to pay cash for.

How did you jump to the conclusion that this is about race?

Out of my $10k/month take-home pay I spend $550 a month for my mid-size luxury car. It's a pleasure to drive, with great engineering.....I grew up in a HH with 6 to 7 figure income, tony private schools and Ivy League college... but didn't realize until I started visiting this site, that in fact the rich don't drive these vehicles...someone should have told this to the majority of our friends and neighbors growing up...seems like we all missed the memo from central standards...

All the truly rich people in the wealthy town I grew up in drove 10 year old green Buicks. The not so rich drove old Mercedes. The ones who just made their money drove BMWs.

Sure. If you don't have the money then don't spend it.

I have the money, and I'm NOT spending it on either MB or BMW. I don't think either is a waste of money if that's what you want, but I don't like using a car as a status symbol. I drive a Honda, and I'm perfectly happy with it. Cars are transportation to me, nothing else.

I'm sorry...I don't get it, is this you bragging? You make $200k and have a $35k car so you're the authority on what the "rich" are doing? Sorry, no, please drive through.

Your parents must be so sad that after they worked hard to make millions and sprung for "tony private schools" all you can afford is the 3-series.

Thanks- I'm 30, so I think I'm doing OK on the income front....get some perspective...

I thought this was disingenuous as well. You make $200,000 year but need to take a loan for $550 per month so you can feel like you did as a kid when your parents made $1M?? Maybe you're 30, but you still can't afford your 3 series. You need some perspective. I hope those generous parents of yours don't hold it against you and go ahead and pay your kids' private school tuitions and fund their 529 plans. The kids won't be able to rely on you to provide that for them. But at least you have a pleasurable drive. Again, you need some perspective.

The only way to be cool in a BMW is to have one of the cars that made them ultimate driving machinge like a 2002tii, 2002 turbo, 3.0CS, or better yet a 3.0CSL or real Alpina.

If you get it, you understand; otherwise you're all posers...
