I had mine without ever being pregnant. The insertion was uncomfortable/ moderately painful but not awful. I think the NP doing it was more nervous than I was -- it was her first insertion in a nullip, and it was definitely a tighter squeeze than she was used to. I didn't get any cytotec to dilate the cervix, and I think I took some motrin ahead of time, but I drove myself to the appointment and back home without any problem.
I do wish I'd been given a rx for something stronger for a few days at least afterward. That was when I had what felt like the worst menstrual cramps of my life. Overall, I am happy I got it, and it was a great choice for me, but being prepared for a range of responses is probably good. I'm curious if the women who had strong vagal responses to the insertion (nausea, vomiting, passing out) tend to pass out from other things? I probably could've predicted that since I've always had wicked menstrual cramps, that would be my body's response. Especially for a wee little uterus that never had anything inside it before. Removal was nothing like insertion -- totally painless. I'm pregnant now, and planning to "re-up" with the Mirena postpartum. I hope that all the stretching my uterus is doing will make it happier about its little plastic friend this time.

15:15 - that should subside. Also, you might feel it (or think you feel it) up in there for a couple of weeks. I did at first, but then the sensation went away. I haven't had any issues in the six months i've had it - only one episode of spotting, no more cramping, really no PMS symptoms at all.
For me, the bigger adjustment has been going off the pill and having my skin go crazy. Pimples at 40? I could do without that. I always had really great skin and honestly, I have no idea what to do with the skin I have now. |

Horrible pain! I had mine done 3 days after my period ended. They told me it would be a little pinch. I was trying not to scream on the table but I was lifting myself right up because of the pain. I was yelling at the doctor that he was hurting me and to hurry up! I kept yelling "Get out get out get out!!!" I was in a lot of pain for hours afterward. It is now day 3 and I don't feel the cramping like everyone else says but I feel pain. I know exactly where that little sucker is and I can feel the pressure of it. I have pains and I'm hoping they go away soon.
That being said I have never had babies and I heard it's a lot more painful for women who haven't been stretched (uterus etc) due to being pregnant. IVF is still more painful then an IUD insertion but at least during IVF they give you meds. Thank God for adoption!!!

Just got my 2nd one at ~2 months postpartum. Had my 1st one placed around the same time after my 1st child. This time around was so easy. Mild cramping when they sounded (measured) the uterus, and then, all of a sudden, it was done, and I didn't even know they had started to put it in. No real cramping afterwards, and just some light bleeding for 1-2 days.
Things that may have helped (aside from the fact that I've already had 2 kids): I took a prescription dose of ibuprofen about an hour before the procedure, and they used the "numbing spray" on my cervix before they put on the tenaculum (a tool they use to grab the cervix). |
| These stories are scary. Keep that sh&t far away from my uterus. Seriously I'd rather be on birth control than have something irritating the uterine lining. Not worth the risks. |
| I thought the insertion was bad... Until I felt the cramps 2 weeks later. I was ready to go to the ER more than once. After a few days of constant pain it stopped and hasn't happened again except for short times, maybe 30 minutes or so. I have now survived Mirena for 4 months, and it does get better as time goes on but the first few months were really rough. I would still do it again though as I do think that after the 6 month mark the side effects go away, and the benefits are worth it. |
| I got mine done about 4hrs ago. I was given local anaestetic and was told to take 2 panadiene (paracetamol which is like tylenol with codiene) beforehand and OMG it really hurt. I am pretty good with pain (drug free birth etc) and I was in tears. I'm drugged up now and the cramps are tolerable. |
+1 Had it for close to 3 years with no problems at all. |
| holy crap I'm so glad to read different people's experiences! I'm researching Mirena to determine whether or not to do it and I ABSOLUTELY will never get this thing implanted!! I had cervical curettage done a few yrs ago and that was the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life! I'm in no way inclined to re-experience anything like that ever again. |
| I had Mirena put in yesterday and I think I nearly broke the assistant's hand because it hurt so bad (luckily she's a friend and didn't hold it against me) I have had 2 c-sections - dilated to 10 with my first child before we found out he was breech - and that didn't matter at all. Horrible, horrible pain. I cramped hard for about 15 minutes afterwards until the Motrin kicked in. I stayed with the Motrin for about 18 hours afterwards but have been fine. Just a little mild bleeding. I'll be interested to see if that pain will be worth it. |
| Insertion wasn't too bad, but I had pretty bad cramps (like worst menstrual cramps) that came and went for as long as 6 weeks after. I have had it for over year now though and no pain, no period, no pregnancy, no forgetting to take the pill, no problem! |
| Strange how much it varies. I'm a wimp and it wasn't bad, at all. |
I read that and became barren for a few seconds. |
| Just read this whole thread and have never been happier about my lesbianism. |
