Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
| Barnsley said 28 per class have been accepted..up from 26 per class last year. |
28 per class have been accepted at Pinecrest/Oakview. This is no different from other classrooms county-wide. I don't like it, but recognize that the HGC classrooms should not be exempt from this. |
| We love the energetic PTA and the higher grade level teachers in our DDs home school.. decided to stay. The class will be smaller than at the HGC, not that it was a factor. |
Which HGC did you turn down? Also, odd how the numbers vary between HGC schools. 26- 29 per class depending on the school. How did they come up with those numbers? |
Class sizes county-wide are increasing because of budget issues. Sometimes magnet programs over-accept if e.g. twins are accepted. |
The magnets were created to "desegregate" - plain and simple. Points west of the city aren't very diverse. |
What are people's opinions about sending a student to the Blair magnet program who did not attend the elementary and middle school magnet programs?
The Blair magnet is a school w/in itself. These students RARELY - if ever - mingle with the general population. They're very bright, but sometimes socially inept. CAP students, on the other hand, don't seem to have that problem. |
| My DD was accepted and we went to the open house last week. There was a brief Q&A session and a parent asked about the statistics regarding entrance to middle school magnet programs from HGP. They said the statistics do exist but did not specify where to find it. I assume many kids take the test and get in middle school magnet programs. I wonder where to find the data. |

True, they mainly take the honors classes, not the non-honors classes. Also, some magnet kids may neglect to talk to the kids in the chairs next to them in english, but I think this would depend on the particular kid. |

What do you mean that some of magnet students are "socially inept"? I'm not being critical in my question; I really would appreciate an honest opinion. If some are socially inept, are there that many more that are than in any other high school? |
Many of the kids do get in, but bear in mind that not all - this year, less than half of the kids who applied to the magnets from our HGC were accepted. Parents erroneously expect that once their kid is into the HGC, it's smooth sailing to the middle school magnets - and this just isn't so. |

She's posted this elsewhere. This statistic is not collected anywhere besides her own imagination. She's also wrong about how they don't "mingle" with other kids, because the magnet kids take all their non-science, non-math classes are with the rest of the Blair population. The magnet kids can be nerdy, I won't lie. They sit at the same tables in the cafeteria and discuss math. I'm sure they do this to a greater extent than other area high schools. However, none of this should be surprising, given that they applied to the magnet based on their strong interests in science and math. |

In my child's HGC and the HGC that my close friend's child attends, about half of the classes got into one or both of the MS magnets.
There were a number of kids who did very well in the HGC but who did not get in (or were waitlisted) to the MS magnets. |
| Just wanted to say thanks to the parents who answered my query about making the switch from language immersion programs. My DC likes the center after taking the tour, but we're still torn. Logistics are an issue, and the bus ride would cut into free time after school. |
PP here with language immersion/now HGC child. Bear in mind that you can always return to the home school. If child liked it during the tour, you could consider enrolling him/her, and committing to do it until say, Thanksgiving, at which point you can revisit the question and return to the home school if you wish. OTOH, if you reject the slot, you cannot reverse that decision. |
