Why would anyone send their child to GWU?

For GWU law grad -- it is ranked a respectable 20 on the US News list. And, GWU undergrad is much worst -- it was ranked #51 until it was thrown off the list this year for cheating on its reporting stats.

What are some "white trash schools?"

White trash schools are ones that aren't flagship state schools, but are just "so-so". And, people can still do well graduating from them.

Private school cost for state school quality. Crazy

My impression of the undergrad from what I could tell was mainly that it was very diverse and international and there were great facilities and a great location within the city.

Oh and I forgot that for IP Law it is very highly regarded. IP was my focus and many of my classmates were employees of the USPTO. I was in a section that had some classes with the evening students and that was a great experience as I learned so much from older classmates who were working by day and taking classes at night.

GW night school grad here. Took the PTO-Federal Circuit clerkship-big law route. DH and I will retire in 5 years at age 50. GW did fine by me.

My daughter graduated from GWU undergraduate school in 2010. Her experience at GW was mixed, some very positive academic experiences, some a bit negative but not to the extreme. She enjoyed being in DC and was fortunate enough to be in DC for the election of Obama.

Students need to recognize that making a college choice is not about any rankings or lists. It's about searching out the school that best fits their interests and needs. There is no such thing as a "dream school" because no school will be a perfect match. As in life, you embrace the positive and navigate through the negative.

Anyone who says his/her college is perfect is either pumping his/her own ego about the school he/she attends or is oblivious to the imperfections in his/her college...and all colleges have imperfections. The good colleges recognize their faults and work to improve upon them.

Best of luck of all those who are now or in the future on the exciting journey to selecting their best match!

My son currently attends GW and is doing very well. He was, awarded a yearly academic scholarship and tells me that he pays around the same or less than most of his friends, who attend schools such as,Vila Nova , Johns Hopkins and even some state schools. He has had wonderful opportunities regarding internships, networking, and has joined a fraternity. He will be doing his semester abroad in Peru this fall. We feel that he is getting a quality education and that attending GW will definently open some doors for him in the future.

You can take a GW degree into any city in the country, and almost any employer will know the college.

Comparable to a Northeastern, Fordham, Tulane on the undergraduate level. A nice fit for some, especially those interested in IR.

The law school and graduate schools have an incredible record of alumni achievement.

Not really. Are you confusing GW with Georgetown? GW name recognition is largely confined to the East Coast.

Did any of you (soccer moms) go to "top" colleges or even finish secondary school (non-GED route)? Would any of you even have money to send your children to college aside from your husbands?

GW is a fine school, not elite, but not a poor choice. As a Georgetown alum I can awaken all of you to the fact that Georgetown is a relatively poor school with many sub par facilities. Sure G-Town has general lay prestige and yes it is an elite institution, but is it truly on par with the likes of HYPSM? Not at all. I agree with the posters who understand that outside of HYPSM/Oxbridge, there really is little difference in school prestige generally speaking.

Excuse me, but what the hell does "m" stand for in your hybrid suggestion of the top schools? This is the only thing in your post worth commenting on.

Well, then, i would amend that acronym to read HYPSMCCDP. Because "m" seems kinda random.
