How long will Deal be able to accommodate every child from every in-boundary ES (including Oyster in Woodley Park where most families desert that MS for Deal)? Are classes getting crowded, will OOB spots become impossible? And waht about the concern that families just 'borrow' an address to get in, and how long will in-boundary families put up with the inflated numbers owing to the cheats?

Can anyone link me to an official source showing what the feeder elementaries to Deal are?

Thanks. Anyone have knowledge about these feeder schools changing? I heard something about Bancroft changing to feed elsewhere and Eaton feeding only to Hardy.

No idea, 10:21, where did you hear this?

This is real and a bigger problem than people realize. Also happens at Janney. Many cars with MD tags roll up to drop off kids of all races. I personally know of one family (the child was white actually) where the child was audited--the staff did a home check. The child had to leave the school in September. The principal is cracking down on this, but there is an epidemic of this. Deal Principal is also going crack down hard.

There has been a follow up for prosecution with Office of Finance and Revenue in the above referenced case. Auditors and cameras are staked out all around the school. That is one the many upsides of modernization, IMO.

Horace Mann and Key parents should lobby to get in the Deal boundary. Because very few seem to even consider Hardy--at least no one I communicate with--but that a pretty narrow demographic. (HHI and in boundary).

Isn't Deal pretty full? Why would DC allow additional elementary school to become feeder schools for Deal? Doesn't make any sense to me.

It makes no sense at all - and believe that won't happen. What Key and Mann parents need to do is create some momentum around Hardy. I think this is what our former chancellor was trying to do but she completely messed up. It seems like there is enough going on at Hardy to work with - parents should pick up the ball and make it happen.

Heh. They wouldn't without removing another school. They would have to pull other schools out of the boundary to make the room. They added Shepherd to the Deal in the early 2000's when Paul Jr High was closed (or turned charter, whatever). I don't recall which school they pulled out to do this. Hearst, maybe? Anyone remember?

A bit off-topic but did they really add Shepherd to the feeder pattern in the 2000s. When I went to Deal in the early 80s there were a lot of kids from Shepherd. Maybe it didn't matter much back then...

Mann used to be a feeder. don't know when it was pulled.

Below is 2009 chatter on DCUM about possible feeder school changes for Deal. I have no idea if it is true or not...

However, if you do not live in the part of Mt. Pleasant that is in boundary for Deal and your child attends Bancroft, you do not have a "right" to go to Deal, because Bancroft is not longer a feeder school for Deal. But if you live in the same spot and your child attends one of the feeder schools out of boundary (Shepherd, Lafayette, Murch, Janney), then your child may automatically go to Deal.

And as a PP noted, this could all change (again). Eaton (a former Deal feeder school) was permitted a transition period last year and I understand that students Eaton students were permitted to choose Hardy or Deal. I don't know what the plan will be for this year.

12:24 -- as to "auditors and cameras"...the primary concern would be out-of-state families who don't even pay DC taxes, but there's a new wave of fakers, DC residents who use in-boundary addresses for, say, Deal. Much more difficult to call, yet will continue to swallow ever-more valuable OOB spots. Lotto waitlist barely, if at all, budged there last summer. Did anyone get in Deal off the waitlist this year?

As a DC taxpayer, I find it significantly harder to get worked up over this. Sorry, I really don't care if little Thurston Howell IV has to make room at the lunch table for LaShonda because her mommy dropped her off at Lafayette on the way to cleaning the houses of 4 different inboundary residences for Lafayette. I know you WANT me to keep the poor, dirty, little peasant girl out of your public school, but when you try to go about it I'm going to do everything I can to make sure you get a big fat black eye.

One city.
