Honestly being a TJ Senior parent - low GPA at TJ is very subjective. Everybody will be happy when kid gets into TJ and thinks they end up at MIT / Harvard when the reality is completely different unless you are at the top 10% of TJ with GPA over 4.6. Most of TJ kids end up in regular schools not top 20.

At TJ because of its intense competition, GPA 4.35 is considered top 1/3rd of the class unfortunately from what school counselors said. What GPA are you referring to here?. Low GPA from TJ won't even get you into UVA or VT. If you change school, you will have to explain in the Common App additional information section why school change was made in Junior year to give admission officers context why the change was made.

According to Naviance, Harvard and MIT are the only schools where the GPA of the average admit is above 4.6.
A 4.6 GPA is extremely difficult.
If your GPA is above 4.6 and your SAT is 1570 or higher, you've got pretty close to a 25% chance at Harvard from TJ.

Almost everybody from TJ gets into VT.

Sourcr?

Naviance.

Naviance cannot tell you this. You have no idea if it was ecs, essays, hooks, etc. plus naviance in fcps is an average of more than one year’s worth of info.

So dumb you make that claim.

I was responding to the ridiculous notion that these schools are unrealistic unless you have a 4.6 GPA. 4.6 is the average GPA of accepted students. About half of the accepted students have lower GPAs. Sure it's rare but it's not crazy rare. Did you think I was saying that all you needed was a GPA and SAT score, WTF is wrong with you?

The statistics are the statistics. 25% of Harvard applicants with a 4.6 GPA or higher and a 1570 SAT or higher get accepted. I'm sure some of them have cracked ECs or they are hooked but there is no reason to believe they are hooked more frequently than those with lower GPA/SATs or that they have significantly better ECs than those with lower GPAs/SATs.

And it doesn't hurt that naviance is more than 1 year's worth of info, more datapoints just makes it more valid.

Where is this statistic: 25% of Harvard applicants with a 4.6 GPA or higher and a 1570 SAT or higher get accepted.

Do you even have access to the TJ naviance? It really seems like you do not.

The Naviance scattergram shows 12 students applied to Harvard with an SAT score 1570 or higher and a GPA of 4.63 or higher.
5 were accepted.
5/12=0.416 or ~41%
The Naviance scattergram also shows 6 applicants with an ACT score of 35 (the average ACT score of accepted applicants from TJ) and a GPA of 4.59 or higher (the average GPA of TJ students that took the SAT and were accepted to Harvard). But that student looks like they also submitted an SAT score. So we conservatively assume that none of the rejects from the ACT chart were also on the SAT chart and expand the SAT denominator by 5 so it is 5/17 or 0.294

So more than 25% of the TJ applicants to harvard with a 1570 or better and a GPA higher than 4.6 get accepted.

Omg NO. It doesn’t mean over 25% of TJ applicants to Harvard with a 4.6+ and a 1570 or better get accepted. It means approximately 30% of these particular kids who applied got in. There is no clue about awards, hooks, ecs, letters of recs, essays, etc.

You can’t make a general conclusion about anything based on Naviance data. 🙄

A 4.6+ GPA is top 5% at TJ. There’s a pretty good chance for students in this subset to get in one of HYPSM!

Omg are you this tedious in real life. Everyone knows what she means. Everyone knows what she means. You've been nitpicking someone offering semi useful information without providing anything of value yourself.

Maybe you understood what was said was not what was intended but not everyone did. Be more clear people! And much less defensive when you’re in the wrong.

No. The world is not going to use 100 words where 99% of the people will understand with just 5 words just so fussy idiots like you will understand what they mean.

I am the second DP here saying the statements were clear to everyone but you. Did you think the OP was saying GPA and SAT are all you can get into Harvard, or do you think you are protecting someone else that actually thought this? Stop being a douche.

They should transfer. You’re the adult not them and you should make the call. They’re not emotionally/cognitively mature enough to make the decision at 15 and they’re clearly struggling. All of this nonsense about not being able to make friends at a new school their junior year is just that—nonsense. My DC was very opposed to being transferred at the time as an adolescent. I made the call and DC thrived at new school, made friends at new high school and now is in T5 college and acknowledges that it was the right call.

To maximize college placement opportunities, the key focus should be differentiation and gpa remediation. Assuming kid stays at current school, I would drop the high level classes, get tutors, and shoot for all A junior year. Next, I agree with a pp about choosing a non-stem major - perhaps humanities, or an interdisciplinary major with a social science? And spend this summer doing something on that topic that they can write about on essays. Show intellectual curiosity in that area. Join/create EC that aligns with intended major. I am not an expert but my kid went to a very competitive private with really accomplished kids - both stats and EC. I had my kid focused on getting best grades they could and focused on a specific academic area where they excelled. Took high level classes in only a few areas. Despite all the claims of needing high rigor in everything, my kid took few adv classes and placed very well in a top college. Because they had a story that was authentic and different than peers. Kid worked really hard and Grades were good but not top compared to school peers...but interests were really solid and intended major story was super strong. Moving to a new school may or may not be the answer. Figure out a plan that works for your kid. Be different. Good luck!
