The “backdoor” to Boston College just got outed by the student newspaper. Ouch.

I assume that this is fake the admissions stats and game rankings, which obviously should be an immediate expulsion from USNews ranking.

But I don't understand why they'd require a 2 year associates degree first, just to transfer to BC as a junior. Isn't that admitting that the first 2 years at BC are no better than community college?

This is huge in California with the UCs. A large number of students spend 2 years at junior college then transfer to a UC. Would you say the same thing about the UCs?

Princeton has a similar gap1year bridge program thats for uber wealthy as well as FGLI

Backdoor.

The outrage is for the dishonesty.

Yes, of course it is well known that a state college is a community college plus an upper years program. That's why advanced students do things like 4 year Masters or multiple majors or graduate early and move on for masters.

The irony I see is that the article is well written, but the quotes from the Foundation kids are barely coherent. It reads like the authors were trying to embarrass the kids they quoted. Standard practice is to sanewash spoken quotes into a readable form.

But this isn't a coveted spot. This is a consolation prize.

And I agree that lots of schools have this program. Here is one at Notre Dame.

Yes, many schools have gateway programs. But as far as we know, BC is the only school with a program for rich failsons within a program for low-income, first-gen students. That’s the difference.

Um . . . The tuition for Notre Dame's Gateway Program is $30,000 less than the tuition for other Notre Dame undergraduates. They're not fleecing connected students like BC.

so are they rich kids unabashedly accepting a $100k "back door entry" or are they unwitting victims being "fleeced" by the college?

um . . .good point

Exceptions for 15 rich kids who are willing to stand on a street corner and rub their tummies while patting their heads. I'm more embarrassed for them.

The program has a website. Doesn't really seem like they're hiding this.

Yes, lots of “selective” schools employ measures like these (hello Colby, Middlebury, Hamilton, NYU, Northeastern, etc.). You could even say that schools that work the waitlist after RD decisions, where need blind often becomes need aware, are essentially doing the same thing or something similar. I don’t begrudge these schools doing what they need to do to meet their numbers and secure sufficient tuition revenue. The common app hs made the chase for students a war for these schools. What I find most disingenuous is that the schools dont have to report the stats for these non traditional starts on their admissions numbers. It makes those schools look much more selective than they really are. Want the tuition dollars, great. Own the admissions data that comes with it.

News flash … there are no colleges that teach English 101, calculus, organic chemistry, etc better than community colleges

American parents don’t do CC because of the “experience “ and friends group.

Welcome to America.

Stop. It’s a well-researched article, and the preference shown to donor/legacy kids should be concerning to the entire BC community. While it’s an exceptional school, this crap should be called out. Kudos to the student journalists responsible for this piece.

OTOH, someone has to pay the bills!
