Have you noticed people taking down their little free libraries?

Maybe the trend has died.

It is literally one more damn thing to keep up with and I don't have time. I imagine people are now figuring this out on their own.

+1 Did you take yours down then?

You are essentially inviting people onto your private property. Any resulting negative consequence could be basis for lawsuit.

How much insurance should we buy if we were possibly thinking about getting one of these?

They very quickly became symbols. If you see one, you know the owners are super progressive left wing people. Free library, rainbow flag, in this house we believe signs.

I glanced at a few but they were always filled with rubbish old books. There's fewer readers these days. I do imagine most will quietly disappear as houses are sold and new owners remove them, as happened in my area. I think we are down to one.

Do you live in my neighborhood? My neighbor has all 3 of these things!!

We have tons in our neighborhood and I think they’re just a place people dump books.

One because their attorney said it had potential liability exposure concerns (she didn’t elaborate what specifically). I can’t imagine what that could’ve meant, it was just a little library like lots of people have. I think she bought it at a farmers market.

Another couple removed theirs because they said it made them feel like they were more likely to be targeted for having it in front of their house. That’s scary too.

I’m wondering if we should take ours down now.

Is this something to worry about?

OP I think your friends are lying to you because they think if they told you the truth, you would argue with them and/or criticize them.

What's the truth?

I live in a wealthy-ish neighborhood with lots of walkers and there are tons of them. I love them. I find great books in them and put books in them, including all the books my teen outgrows. People give away recent bestsellers; I haven't had to buy a book in ages.

this is one of the most bizarre thread I have ever read on DCUM and that's saying something after 15+ years.

I arrange my regualr neighborhood walks to hit as many as possible and I've gotten great books out of them, including out of my own. Sometimes I redistribute - since the big snow mine has been full of fairly undesirable books and needs a cleanout. So I'll throw out anything that no one will ever take, but I'll ask take some on a walk with me and distribute to other libraries I pass. As with anything, you need a moderator/caretaker - the owner needs to clean it regularly, remove any trash, etc. Mine sometimes attracts religious screeds and I simply take them out and throw them away. This is....not hard.

Goodness! My kid saw a spider once and now I'll never open another one again. That seems....dramatic?

Can you tell me why people stand in front of my car in my driveway looking at my neighbor's LFL while I'm trying to drive to work?

I even do the smile, wave, sorry and nothing. They just block me until they are good and ready to amble away. It's the strangest zombiesque thing I've ever encountered.

Things that don't happen for $1000, Alex.

There is no way this is a daily thing. Most LFL users are on foot.

HOA Karen is posting most of the negative posts in this thread. Chill out. It's a little box for sharing books. It's not a dilapidated car on blocks in the driveway.

Are you the same later who doesn't believe people stuff religious texts in LFL?

Probably just they got tired of it and decided to take it down. But you can imagine the OP asked in a way that made that answer seem unacceptable. So they fibbed.

I like them, but I think OP sounds like the kind of person who is too in your business and would keep asking “why??” The kind of neighbor who would ask you who you used for a project and then chastise you if you answer and she thinks that company is too expensive. Tsks about Amazon. Etc.
