Have you noticed people taking down their little free libraries?

Anonymous
I know two friends who have both removed their front yard free library boxes recently.

One because their attorney said it had potential liability exposure concerns (she didn’t elaborate what specifically). I can’t imagine what that could’ve meant, it was just a little library like lots of people have. I think she bought it at a farmers market.

Another couple removed theirs because they said it made them feel like they were more likely to be targeted for having it in front of their house. That’s scary too.

I’m wondering if we should take ours down now.

Is this something to worry about?

The liability is just in attracting more people to your property who otherwise would just pass by. If you're not worried about that, keep doing what's comfortable for you.

I was on a R sub for Little Free Libraries at one point before Reddit banned all my accounts for stuff I never even understood. I had like 600K karma over 11 years and an alt account with like 200K karma over 9. I mostly liked dolls and miniatures but think somehow I got mass reported (? IDK)

Anyway, yes, aggressive ignorants were targeting them just to be able to be like FU smart kind people … pissing on the books, destroying them.

It was heartbreaking.

I'm not taking mine down but we honestly don't get enough foot traffic for it to work.

Targeted for what????

I don’t have one but I remember hearing that resellers will visit the LFL that are registered.

And so if you have an LFL don’t register it - so it’s for readers, not resellers.

This is what I was wondering about!

She didn’t say. She just said “targeted”.

Many are over run with religious pamphlets

Is this a real thing????

I find it pretty hard to believe that people too apathetic to read a book are even going to notice a LFL, let alone exert the energy to go around seeking them out to destroy them.

It’s a LFL. it’s not yours to decide that.

We’re on a corner. Ours gets a lot.

Weird thing, we ran out of the big stack of “old” books we had to get rid of, and only put about 1-2 books a month in it now, but other people drop stuff off in it all the time. It’s almost always at least half-full

Liability - people can get hurt on your property. Parent complain about LFL giving their kid splinters, or the door squeezed their fingers. Or they object to the reading material as inappropriate. And on and on.

Targeted - LFL have all kinds of junk dumped on them. Old textbooks, religious pamphlets, political materials. And LFL owners tend to be liberal (I say tend to be, but that's putting it mildly. In reality I don't know a single conservative/Republican LFL owner.). So your LFL could be targeted by conservatives. Not to mention old fashioned teen vandals.

I have a LFL and my one neighbor is always stuffing Korans in there. But this is an issue across many religions with many LFL of you are part of any LFL community, your might know that.

LFL don't belong to the community. They belong to the person who puts it up and maintains it.

I’d make sure I had a huge umbrella insurance policy if I had one on my property.

You are essentially inviting people onto your private property. Any resulting negative consequence could be basis for lawsuit.

NW DC near a metro. We are overrun with little free libraries. None require anyone to step onto personal property. They are all set at the edge so you just stop on the sidewalk and look at the books. I have not heard of anyone taking theirs down. While clearly some people put that should be recycled in them, overall they are well maintained and I have never heard of anyone having any issues with them.
