Some parents exaggerated. If it was so unsafe (beyond the current news cycle) it would have been closed already. Closing it down and moving kids to Crown only saves MCPS from the embarrassment of building a school based on pre COVID enrollment projections and having to use it as a holding school. The Gaithersburg mayor said the quiet part out loud when he opposed using Crown as a holding school. That won’t attract high income earners to his city, so naturally he wants to transplant the Wootton kids.

There are multiple issues and I doubt parents are exaggerating as many of the schools have serous issues. However, who would send their kids to Wootton after all the problems?

So if many schools have the same issues (or are worse off) why aren’t those schools closed or being moved? Wootton parents are oissed at not getting a renovation many years at their current site. Wootton shouldn’t have to be closed, have its boundaries changed, and be moved to a new city in order to eventually get a new building.

This is all to cover for MCPS’ screw up and its desire not to use a shiny new building as a holding school.

Actually, per the actual data, Magruder is the high school in the worst shape in the county.

Magruder regulalry has floods and ceilings falling down. The ceilings are a huge concern as that could kill someone. Our school has flooded this year too.

Anyone who really looks into Wootton outside of test scores is going to be concerned about the violence at the school, especially since they have the first school shooting inside the school. Instead of worrying about this, you have bigger things to worry about.

No. Someone sent an ankle bracelet kid into Wootton instead of one of the MCPS special schools.

Whomever made that decision has bigger things to worrh about.

So not a good time to bring up the Go Fund Me that was started last year for Wootten to raise funds for renovations/improvements? Wootten has gone a long time without a reno

And that’s the reason for closing it, moving the boundaries, adding 700 new students from other high schools, and changing the name to Wootton @ Crown (instead of Thomas Wootton High School)? If Wootton is the worst in the county, why wasn’t it repaired last year, or the year before that? Why was it pulled off the CIP three different times? MCPS hasn’t answered any of these questions, and doesn’t want to answer them.

Add students to an underutilized school? The horror!

It’s not Wootton if you’ve changed the boundaries and are adding 30%+ more kids from other schools. Tell me again when another MCPS school was closed, moved, had a boundary change, and 30%+ kids added all at the same time?

Northwood closed, Woodward closed, Leland MS closed (now a community center) and other ES's. I'm sure I'm missing a few.

Did MCPS deny those were closures like it is Wootton? Seems like when you do all of the foregoing things and abandon the building that was Wootton for 55 years, it’s a closure. MCPS didn’t follow proper closure procedures, so we’ll see if the recommendation for Option H stands. The BOE might not want to adopt a recommendation that could be an immediate legal problem. Instead, it might go with Option G for a while until the dust settles. In fact, it might want to avoid further parental backlash after how MCPS handled parental notification and reunification on Monday at Wootton.

Those special schools are not designed for DJJ kids. Those are for different special needs and most of those kids aren't violent. DJJ used to have their own school but it was shut down years ago.

Technically its not a closure if they are moving a lot of the students and staff to Crown. Sounds like Wootton is really struggling so maybe a change with new facilities might do the school some good.

That's fine, let the community pay for it. How much did they raise? Many schools have gone a long time without updates or renovations. Wootton has had some renovations, including recent ones per the school newspaper.

You all have much bigger worries than where the school is located.

I'm also an employee and parent. I feel like I am watching Taylor destroy things in MCPS that are actually working. He's dismantling nationally recognized programs. He's taking away positions of well-respected special education leaders. He created cross-functional teams that no one seems to understand. Most of all, I feel like he's not listening to feedback from the community. He's good at glossy flyers and using buzzwords. He likes making videos. But I do not think he's moving MCPS in the right direction.

It sounds like Wootton is lucky to be moved vs. closing. However, Wootton has had some very serious issues over the last 10 years so maybe the change is a good thing?

MCPS has three schools with heavy supervision and monitoring. Why weren't these used?

Someone made a conscious decision to let this kid attend Wootton. Not sure right now if that's a Principal, Council member, Judge and attorney - but that's the smoking gun. Someone did this intentionally to cause an issue at Wootton. That's the big hidden news story here.
