My kids 630am bus everyday is AWESOME!

it’s 2 years and everyone does it. it’s not that terrible. starting elementary at 11:20 and kids getting out at 6pm for 7 years is insane

Not when you've got 4 kids

i have the same amount of kids. i was saying it’s 2 years for the kids to be up early. but they appreciate being done earlier and not having to run right to sports like their elementary school siblings. our family is all early risers naturally so maybe that plays into it? 2 weeks of my elementary kids being home/not going to school until 11:20 is draining on everyone. especially when they get up at 5:30

Why on earth would you have or allow your kids to get up at 5:30 am ever?

DP. Have you never heard of early birds? Lots of people are early risers. Even children. You would tell your kids to go back to sleep?

"Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise."

Lots of people are night owls too, but parents still parent and make their kids go to bed at a time where they will get enough sleep when they have to catch the bus at 6:30am. And quoting someone based of making the most of your time while the sun is up because no one has electricity is just dumb. It doesn't apply anymore.

Most little kids are early risers. That is why starting school after 9 is a waste. The kids at the late ES already struggle with this. Go into any ES class at 3:00 and it is literally whack a mole for an hour. The late ES get home between 4:30-5:15ish as is. That is why plan E of the middle school start times was ridiculous.

They should switch MS times with ES times

Also agree that having off of school for 9 weeks in the summer is antiquated. Schools have AC now (and honestly , it’s super hot in August when they go back anyways so the AC argument is dumb). Have a 2 week break in June and a 2 week break in August and go to school for July.

It doesn't make things easier for literally everyone. First of all, there are plenty of people who don't work 9-5. But more to the point, elementary parents don't want their kids going in at 11. Parents of active high school students don't want their kids starting sports practice at 5, and ending at 8. Or starting their part time job at 5 and getting off at 10. Or playing in a basketball game from 8 - 10.

Basically, this is taking a schedule that works for most people, and switching it to only support the segments of high schoolers who have parents who work 9 - 5, don't do activities, and are lazy about getting out of bed, but not too lazy because they'll need to do it themselves since their parents will be gone to work. If that's your family, I'm sorry, but that doesn't justify changing everyone else's schedule.
.

+1 million

And get your kids to go to bed earlier. If they are sleep deprived because school starts early they should go to bed earlier.

So many lazy parents.

Or we keep the shorter day but add on weeks to make up for the 2 hours that we are cutting from the day, so shorter summer.

Which is it?

1) Current schedule
2) Later release time
3) Longer school year but shorter days

I would chose less overall "instruction hours"

I think 11am is too late to start but I think 7:30am is way to early.

All schools should start at 9am, with before care options in elementary for parents who need it. IMO.

Yes little kids tend to wake up earlier, but they are also the hardest to get out the door. I don't personally know any parents enjoy getting elementary kids to school before 8am.

And MS and HS kids can be actively harmed by early start times -- once puberty hits, kids generally benefit from extra sleep.

9am still gets school out at a reasonable time and leaves plenty of daylight for sports practice or other activities.

The different times are because they need to reuse the busses, I think, and also to reduce traffic congestion. Anyone know for sure?

Yeah, especially since a lot of those “instruction” hours are wasted time.
