With WaPo’s demise, what other sources of DC metro news coverage?

I agree. And they did a crappy job on several other articles, including coverage of the UBC Plan; it seemed like they wrote articles based on talking points from County Council members. But more importantly, it’s not the breadth and depth I want to read.

Ok, so nothing real. Just your "vibes"

Real reporters don't work at places like the Banner, partly because the pay is shit.

DP. I subscribe to the WSJ, Post and NYTimes. (and Bloomberg!). If the Post doesn’t have decent local news then there is truly no reason for me to keep my subscription. The only thing I will miss is Capitol Weather Gang but I guess I will just follow Matthew Capucci’s socials.

+1 there are tons of options. Democracy won’t die in darkness. I’m not subscribing because it used to be good.

There's only a handful of news organizations in the entire world that can match the Post.

Could not can. It is crap now.

The Post just won two Pulitzer prizes, after winning three the year before that, and three more in the year before that. You people are ridiculous.

I really like the sports section of The Washington Times.

I can’t read their opinion section anymore and some of the news coverage is clearly being influenced. And the layoffs are not about becoming more competitive, as the editor claimed. How can we support that with our subscription?

But…it’s the WaPo. It is irreplaceable. And the journalists who remain will only be hurt by cancelling. So we feel stuck. God, I hate Bezos.

I will always subscribe to the Washington Post no matter what. Democracies cannot function without newspapers. No one else cannot replace the Post. Yes, it's a dark time for the paper, but the Trump era will be over soon enough and I want the Post to still be here when he's gone.

These people canceling their subscriptions are idiots.

At some point you have to call it. What are you supporting with your subscription? It’s not the Democracy Dies In Darkness days …. Those are long gone. Bezos is supporting an administration that is quite actively trying to make sure that we don’t have free and fair elections ever again. Maybe read the news and get up to speed.

You how there's people on the far right who are just completely whacked out and believe all kinds of crazy nonsense? You're the left wing version of that.

I wish I was a lefty loon. Pay attention. Did you read about what happened in Georgia yesterday? Are you listening to the rhetoric from this administration about federalizing elections (highly unconstitutional and also intended to exert control over elections).

Seriously, maybe read the news. Like, not Fox News, but the news.

You said the Post is supporting, in its reporting, Trump stealing elections, which I don't even know how you could possibly be more wrong. The Post has been reporting on Trump vs. Georgia's election officials literally for years.

With the change in the editorial slant last year I did not trust them to give me the full picture, so canceled the Post. Canceled Amazon. Follow Aaron Parnas on Substack. He is heavy on politics, but also does stories local too. Also WTOP website for local news. 📰

I’m a journalist who freelanced for the Post for years, shifting sections as they were discontinued. I lost my last gig there at the end of 2025.

They had already decimated local coverage and now it sounds like it will be nearly nonexistent. The Banner isn’t perfect, but its reporters come from some fairly big news outlets. At least it isn’t all just rehashed press releases like MoCoShow, which can be helpful for learning about local news quickly but with zero depth.

Any suggestions for local Substack newsletters or blogs? I’m no longer on X, which is where I got some. local news before Musk. I cut way back on Amazon purchases.

Bezos fired one third of all Post reporters, including their Ukraine correspondent who is presently freezing her ass off in a war zone without power or heat. The Washington Post we used to know is dead. It’s gone. It’s not coming back. Bezos destroyed it to please Trump. It’s a tragedy and a harbinger of things to come.

Nothing can replace the Washington Post!

Except that for all of human history before 1877 we somehow managed without it. Get a grip.

I’m not saying that. Your reading comprehension is weak. I’m saying that with today’s layoffs and slashing of various sections of the Post, the publication continues to lurch toward being a propaganda arm for Bezos and, because Bezos oh-so-cozy with Trump these days, Trump. I’m not supporting that with my $. Just like I’m not buying anything ever again on Amazon.

You do you. But I’m not endorsing a paper that is clearly being influenced by a Trump supporter and oligarch while Trump dismantles are democracy.

The stakes are high now. They were high before, sure, but if you ever wondered what it looked like when countries turned into oligarchic dictatorships, you’re seeing it now. Apparently, Democracy Dies in Darkness was a marketing tagline when Bezos thought democracy was cool. Apparently, he’s changed his mind.

See, that's not true. The NYT and Wall St Journal -have- effectively replaced the Post for national and international news reporting.

I wish the Metro reporting at the Post was trending more robust and built out, because I personally DO value tough local reporting. However that's the opposite of what's happening. So why would I continue to look for local hard / investigative news coverage at a gutted Metro section? That makes zero sense.

Meanwhile, this 'idiot' and former print journalist herself gets excellent national/int'l journalism from a collection of sources (BBC, the Economist, WSJ, NYT, Atlantic, Axios, and more). Call me when Bezos uses some of his peronal billions to beef up the Metro section vs. gutting it. I'll be interested

I’m with you as well, I’ve had a subscription for my entire life and haven’t given it up yet.
