They did use Easter Monday years ago. I think it was one of the years with 2 feet of snow, maybe 2016. It wasn't designated a make-up day. They sent central office staff to sub at schools because there weren't enough subs. |
https://pgcps.community.highbond.com/document/2e0d50b0-5b8e-4386-b082-f04acf4a11af/ I counted 183 days from August 26-June 12 so they have 3 built in. They weren't closed during Rosh Hashana but have a random off day April 27 so that cancels out. While they have 3 days built in to MC's 1 they closed 7 days that school was scheduled 1/26-2/3 while MC was closed 5 student days 1/27-2/2 so both have the same number of makeup days (4). |
2016 was the last year until 2027 that MC had spring break after Easter despite 2018 and 2024 being early Easters. It couldn't have been 2016 but possibly 2018. |

From today's e-mail:
"At present, per state law, we need to make up four instructional days. There are two days that we have identified in the calendar that will be changed from non-instructional days to instructional days: March 20th will be a full instructional day. June 18th will be an early release instructional day and the new last day of the school year for students and staff. Other potential make up days are also being considered and some of those days may require additional approvals before being announced - none of those potential days are in February. Like other localities in Maryland, we will be requesting a waiver from the state of some of the missed instructional days. Pending the outcome of that waiver, we will update our Make-Up plan and share that with you as soon as we know." |
The state would have to provide a waiver for Easter Monday. MCPS cannot just do it because it's a mandated day off from state. |
| Terrible. They take our holiday away |
Who received this email? |
It was at the very bottom of the super long code green essay. |
Only W schools |
This is unfair. The jews got their holidays, Indians got their diwali, Christians will get their Easter and Passover, they are not even taking away lunar new year!! They came after a muslim holiday?? It is not a good look MCPS! |
This was in the email:

They will miss school and classwork. Especially bad for high school students. |
Excusing an absence is still putting a penalty on the student to not only learn something that was taught to other children, but not to them, but also to make up work after hours on their own time. Now imagine they have missed other days around it for illness or other health condition. |
True. And yet not all religous holidays are days off of school so providing an excused absence helps. |
| As a teacher I will exempt students from anything due or assigned that day. I wont make them work twice as hard to make it up unless they want to do it to improve their grade |
