How can you get Narcan to have around just in case?
|
I live in Arlington County and there are sessions where you can get it for free and get trained from the county. Like a five minute process. |
Np. What do you mean by this? |
If you can get to DC, here's the list of free distribution sites: https://dbh.dc.gov/page/where-can-i-get-naloxone-dc You could also probably call your local health department and ask the easiest way to get it in your community. |

My kids go to a less wealthy school. There are drugs around, but for the most part the kids don't go to rehab - they end up in the ER or jail instead.
In any school, the drugs travel in social circles. Kids can avoid them if they want to. For my kid, going to a funeral for a sports teammate who OD'ed early in high school was enough to convince him to never go near the stuff. The scary thing is that fentanyl is being slipped into everything these days, including pills that are disguised to look like black market prescription drugs. It doesn't take a years-long addiction to OD, it can happen in one dose. |
| agree the fentanyl is by far the scariest things- it had made its way at an alarming rate into the hands of high school kids, local schools, they can get it easily and even if they are not searching for it, other party drugs are laced with it. 2 kids we know well who i never in a million years would have thought would develo9p addition issues have. One if out of rehab and so far sober (as far as I have heard from my daughter) the other has been in rehab for over 3 months. Some want to turn the other way, I say this can happen to anyone. Its a cautionary tale to any parent willing to o9pen their eyes, private OR public! |
| sorry for typos^ did that on my phone and without glasses! |
| What exactly are they going to rehab for? Weed? Stronger? |
My kid attends a College with a lot of TJHSST kids and similar top schools. Well, he says those kids like hard drugs and popping pills... my regular kid sticks to beer. |
I can’t imagine anyone going to rehab for weed.. usually it’s opioids |
Minors who are experimenting with these drugs or socializing with those who are should have it! What part of "there's no coming back from dying" do you not get? It's not the minors' "responsibility" so far as no one can sue them or their parents if they don't have Narcan with them, but if they're experimenting why would you not want them to have it? |
NP: Don't be ridiculous PP. Of course "Everyone" does NOT know this. You did, many do, but clearly many parents have no idea. A lot of parents make the mistake of thinking that because they created these kids and have raised them, they KNOW them so well that they'd know if they were using. And most of those parents would be wrong about that. Stop shaming people for something that is absurdly wrong, no, "everyone" does not know this stuff. That is how it gets even more out of control than it usually is in waves, because it's suddenly a wave of more parent awareness and checking their kids. |
from what I am hearing mostly opioids and xanax often a combination |
| Rich kids do more drugs, and scarier ones |
| Get a Narcan kit from county health department. Keep one in the house and one in the car (or kids car). Teach your kid how to use it and how to know when to call 911. Talk about the plan for what you will do if they call you for help, for them or a friend (ie will you help them, will they be in trouble, etc). |
