Call me naive had no idea the drug problem is this bad in the DMV area

+1 Drugs are everywhere. My kid is at UMD, and they've been around people doing drugs since HS. They said they tried MJ once, and didn't like how it felt. So, they stick to alcohol, which IMO, can be bad, too.

The op never said which “top school” this is.

My child goes to McLean HS. All schools want to “sweep it under the rug” when drug abuse happens at their school. I can only speak to McL.

Two years ago, there was a McL kid who showed up early for free breakfast and OD’d at school; the school police officer (oops - I mean “SRO”) save the student’s life with Narcan.

Last year, a kid in the McL pyramid died; he was at Longfellow and had a sib at McL. Not drugs, but these brothers were among 6 area students who decided to get drunk together at 5 AM on a - get this: on a Monday morning before school in FCPS. They all jumped in a car with an unlicensed teen driver who was drunk, and unsurprisingly he crashed; the death was a result.

You can find the news reports on that one.

And, there is quite a bit of legal marijuana use by McL students. It’s really irrelevant that kids are technically, not “legally” allowed to smoke or vape it, because the marijuana is all bought legally by someone (same as alcohol now). Thanks, democrats; great movement your part for “legalizing” it.

Drugs and alcohol are easily available in your kids schools. They know or can easily find out who sells it in their school.

Don’t kid yourself and don’t be naive: it’s available.

Your only defense is to raise your kids to avoid drugs and alcohol.

So you don’t think kids used marijuana when it was illegal? I have a bridge to sell you. Also, the Dems didn’t do this: “On December 18, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Attorney General to expedite the process of reclassifying marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act.”

The democrats in NOVA hung a campaign tag for McAuliffe on my door boasting about how THEY legalized marijuana under Gov. Ralph Northam.

This isn’t getting enough press. Declassifying weed is a gift to the guys making bank off selling 30% THC to the kids we care for in the ER coming in with cannabis hyperemesis syndrome. It’s awful and they go right back to smoking it. Don’t let anyone tell you weed is no big deal. This is not the weed we grew up with. - MD

Not comfortable revealing which school as i don't feel its fair as some of those parents could be on this chat. It is considered to be by pretty much all one of the best. But I am hearing this from others in other schools, as in its worse than ever but very concealed. Especially with prominent more high profiles families. My friends sister is a counselor at another top school and told us this is a huge issue going on right now and that tons of kids are buying kratom at their local gas stations has not idea why it was until today! Bottom line is this appears to be a huge epidemic that not many are openly discussing. One of the kids is a friend of mine and she was the one who opened up my eyes- I was so shocked as they are a very well respected upstanding family and i had no idea about her son, I was shocked. still am and it makes me think about testing my own kid, something i never thought to do. I am educating myself on all of this especially the ability to buy the synthetic kratom which is terrifying.

No. This was always happening. You need to educate your kid not to experiment.

Any school with a lot of money floating around is going to have a party drug problem. It's the issue with going to a "too school" that all the rich parents want, whether public or private.

It's best if your kids are out socializing all weekend, and definitely not during the school week.

Make sure your kids carry narcan and know how to use it. And put the fear of god into them re: fentanyl. It is so, so scary.

Pushing back on this. As scary and horrible as it is, I don’t think minors have a responsibility to take it on themselves to have narcan at the ready.

I'm a teacher and parent of teens. Drug use is happening at all schools across all SES. I grew up in the DMV and attended one of the "top" public schools here. Drugs were everywhere because many of the kids could afford them. So many kids from my school ended up ODing, either as teens or as young adults. The PP who said only wealthy families can afford rehab is correct.

I wish schools wouldn’t sweep it under the rug. A few years ago, fentanyl laced pills began showing up in the Bay Area. A fifteen year old who wasn’t a regular drug user died the night of prom. Teachers had to resuscitate several students on different days. Ambulances for ODs were not uncommon. The administration couldn’t hide this from the students. It scared enough of them that drug use went way down. They’ll buy pot from legit dispensaries but are afraid of other drugs.

what i am saying is that kids are using hard drugs, opioids, synethtics like kratom, xaxan likes it aspirin, pot is the least of it. The situation is very bad. My friend who is a counselor says there has been a task formed with several schools to address it. Not all families involved are wealthy but 3 are and no one really knew until recently. One is my friend so she came out and opened up to me. It has destroyed them. The son is away for months now hopefully getting the help he needs. Ironically the kid who gave him the pill laced with fentanyl was one of his teammates. They have hired an attorney but this "ring" goes apparently really deep and they are not sure thy want to make this public for many reasons. not sure what will happen. just wanted to give a heads up to everyone. these kids i refer to are your all American well rounded, well liked kids- i was and am still shocked. and these are the ones I know of, am sure there are more.

At top schools, of course, more money, less parental involvement.

If you actually cared the way you say you do - and are actually real which is doubtful - you would name the school. Otherwise, you are part of the problem.

Sounds like you're going into an anxiety spiral about this, OP. You have the kids you have. Either they're curious, and might be at risk, in which case you have a lot of work to do in explaining the physical effects of drugs and how they can kill you on the first dose (ex: fentanyl laced pill); or you have non-curious kids, who are not much at risk because even if someone offers them one, they won't take it, in which case you just need to warn them about spiked drinks.

Either way, you've got to accept that right now you're deliberately scaring yourself for no good reason. Stop it.
