Happy Thanksgiving. NO. I wouldn't go if that was your attitude as a host. |
Lol lemme guess you are the perpetual guest and never a host. Do you bring a lame pie and call it a day year after year? |
Look, when your guests sneak out the house for a walk after the slop you serve they’re actually hitting a fast food place.
|
Yes, I am a guest at my family’s Thanksgiving each year. We all alternate gathering at my parent’s or in-laws place. People who are happy to have us. Sorry that no one loves you. |
So, you are the lazy guest who doesn't help. This is only an issue for people who can't be bothered to pitch in or discuss a menu with their hosts. Which you seem awfully familiar with. |
This is so sweet and heartwarming. I love it. |
When my mom cooks no one gets an opinion. Her salads are nasty. We stopped going. |
That's nice, but OP is going and this doesn't seem to be an issue. She has limited access to the kitchen.. So the easiest thing is to just run to the store and get substantial salad mixings and prep it in the morning and get out of the kitchen. Easy peasy. |
Bring can of black beans, a can of sweet corn, ask them to get you a sweet red pepper and an avocado that you can cut up. Mix it up with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar. If want spice , bring a few red pepper flakes. That should tide you over with some of the other sides that are meat free. |
This is exactly what OP has done. The host said she can cook something Thursday morning. This thread is a request for recipe ideas. I have no idea why everyone is piling on OP's clear and reasonable question |
| The "vegetarian guest at Thanksgiving " post comes up every year. |
| Could you order a premade Mac and cheese tray from somewhere? If the hosts have a crockpot, you could even spoon it all in there to reheat so you do not oven space. That would be filling and go with the thanksgiving meal. |
|
If you can go to a grocery store when you land, you can pick up some hummus, marcona almonds, pita chips and olives and cheese and do a mezze type platter. Depending on the length of your flights, you could even carry this with you, and it wouldn't be too problematic if it's a short flight.
It is easy to assemble, nutritious enough if you don't get other hot food, and other guests will like it. Most importantly you won't be getting in the host's way with whatever hot dishes they're preparing. If you eat eggs, picking up a vegetarian quiche is also good. |

I have a veggie relative that makes a delicious mushroom wellington. I think it would reheat really easily, and the meat eaters all love it as a side dish. Could you put something like that in your bag?
I also like the corn, black bean salad. You could precook some barley and bring iti in a ziplock bag, and bring a red pepper, and throw that all together super easily. I don't know why people are being so weird and mean on this thread -- I think your question was very reasonable and nicely expressed. I would also like the Indian green bean recipe! |
Is anyone else craving pad thai right now? And I don't live too close to a decent Thai place.
