Over-rostered team dynamics — what to expect?

I don't know what you mean. It's the same club and team from last year. The roster size was good last year, so I really don't want him on a team where this year kids are fighting for spots. There are another five clubs with similar level kids within 10 miles of our house.

Yeah, avoid over rostered clubs. Happened to my kid last year, it's a caste system of garbage and you are relying of having a fair coach. Consider it the last year of club soccer for a few players. Saw it happen already.

Sounds like you have options.

Problem with not as competitive teams is they tend to have a difficult time rostering players. So its the opposite issue than over rostering.

There's pluses and minuses to everything.

My 2012 DD has 16 kids on her team roster. They’re in EDP if that matters. I’m still new to all this and relatively clueless

Sounds like a dumb comment from a dumb coach or club admin trying to justifying ripping people off.

Nobody is ripping anyone off. Parents are lined up to get their kid on a top team that wins. This is why over rostering occurs.

You just dont like what it takes to play in this type of environment. Guess what? It doesn't matter because other parents want this type of environment and flock to it.

So much parent ego. I was surprised to see parents basically sacrifice their DC development to sit on the bench on a “top team” just so they can tell people they are on a first team. So sad.

My oldest was a superstar soccer player at age 3. It was obvious she had a talent. Because of this we bought into all the nonsense clubs shoveled mostly because we didn't know any better. We thought playing on the top team was what she needed to correctly develop her natural talents. After 10+ years I can confidently say none of it mattered. Talent finds its way to the top team no matter what. What did matter was playing on boys teams and futsal when girls are young.

Now I'm doing it all again with a 2016 and we're having our kid play on the B team of a small local club. So much better not dealing with all superclub drama. If this one has talent she'll need to fight to show it to everyone. We shall see...

What is a "fair coach"? One who gives equal playing time to all players regardless of skill (or even perceived skill)?

One who gets the back part of the roster a lot of playing time in those games that are blowouts. One who is smart enough to adjust the lineup to the opponents strengths of speed or size and doesn't just blindly double down on their first impressions of players in Sept. And most importantly, one who doesn't sideline the same 2-3 players, basically cutting them from the team, because as a coach they can't handle a large roster properly. Essentially, a crap coach uses demotivation more than motivation as a tool. This is why getting a good coach is everything.

None of what you said describes a "fair coach" other than the "doesn't constantly play favorites". The other things you mentioned describes competency more so than impartiality.

Even the things about favoritism have me doubting. Nothing personal against you, since I don't even know you, but I've experienced far too many times where parents think coaches are playing favoritism. Do you actually know of any coach who does not want to win? Coaches will pick players who they think will help a team win. If your child isn't given enough playing time, there is a far greater chance that coach thinks other players are better and very remote chance it is because the coach "favors" other players for any other reason.
