The parents do have a choice. They can make arrangements for the kids to be cared for by friends or family members who are here legally. Or they can have the government facilitate care.

No sympathy. As someone who has resided in other countries, I was fully aware that if I broke the laws, I would be deported. These parents made a choice.

Interesting details on this case, c omplaint submitted on behalf of the family.

The child was being treated in Houston at Texas Children's Hospital.Each time they traveled from the Rio Grande Valley to Houston, they went through a checkpoint where they presente a letter from the hospital explaining the child's need for care. She developed symptoms on Feb 3 and the family headed to the hospital. Sara, the child with the cancer, wears a leg brace. Her parents have a nasal spray to give her if she has a seizure (this is probably nasal valium, something I have heard about because I have a niece with epilepsy and frequent seizures).

They had always been let through the checkpoint until that day. They were taken into custody and some of their treatment by officers was appalling--including taking away the emergency seizure nasal medication and locking it up, where the next shift could ot find it. (Their son, who has acne, was told by one officer he needed to masturbate more.)

Once in Mexico, Mexican authorities arranged for taxi transportation to a secure shelter to protect them from kidnappers who infest the area; according to the complaint, US citizens (two of the children) are at particular risk of kidnapping. They saw bodies in the streets in the area near the shelter.

Was the complaint filed against the Mexican government? The parents were here illegally and were deported. They chose to stay together as a family and have their US citizen children travel with them to Mexico. Mexico is responsible for their safety.

There was a recent thread about one of Musk’s employees who violated her employment by posting “influencer” social media content while on duty. She responded by claiming she was a cancer survivor, taking photos made her feel good, and how dare anyone criticize a cancer victim.

To me, your statement is just another side to the same coin. Cancer is AWFUL and I don’t wish it on anyone and my heart especially goes out to this mother.

But every person who is in our country illegally has a story. It’s too simplistic to say that anyone who is related to someone with cancer can be excused from breaking the law. It doesn’t work that way.

I’ve found that the cancer communities really do try to help in any way, especially with kids. I wish this family had done it the legal way. Plus for many common cancers, the treatment will be the same in Mexico as in the US. It really depends on her actual diagnosis. Wishing the little girl a speedy recovery.

As a parent, if my child had a diagnosis requiring treatment in the US, you better believe I would have a plan lined out for her to stay and get treatment if I was deported. These parents should have done more. They could’ve arranged a guardian for their daughter so she could stay in the US and continue her treatment.

Honestly I think we’ve created a situation of learned helplessness. We’ve expected so little from parents that they aren’t doing some basic basic stuff.

Yes, "there but for the Grace of God go I" definitely doesn't apply here! WE would have been smarter, better prepared, able to handle anything and we NEVER make choices that don't work out.
